I’m sitting on the beach following this week and just thinking….

I might write a way to long memoir here. But I’ll get into the point of this shortly, so bear with me. And I promise, I’m not proclaiming us National Champs. There’s A LOT of work to be done. It’s 1 game.

I’ve waited for a game and Sunday like this for what has felt like decades. Not nearly as long many fans on here. I first started “liking” Miami because my neighbor would bring over a local football star when he kept an eye on me when my mom went to work. I was 10-13. That was Orlando Franklin. I remember thinking this kid was a god. When he went to Miami, I thought it was the coolest thing. I quickly wanted to cheer and follow the canes. I started playing football my freshman year of high school 2007. That was because of Sean Taylor. I littered my MySpace with pics of Sean and his face mask with that tape.

I played through high school and continued to play for 5 years in college (2011-2015). I didn’t get to follow the canes as much for obvious reasons, I was busy. Going to school in New York and staying up there following graduation. I didn’t get to go to games, but as soon as my playing days were over, I got to watch every game.

I reminisced of what the glory days looked like and hoping for that to come back. I thought 2017 was going to be it. I snagged a flight, alone, and went to watch Miami take on Clemson in the ACC championship. Hope quickly fizzled and they got walloped.

The following year they disappointed again. I got a chance to see them play at BC (I was living in Boston). Another appearance that can be described as miserable. In the cold, they scored 14 and lost to an underwhelming BC team.

I moved back to Florida, and took my soon to be wife to my first canes home game since I was maybe in my early teens. It was the UNC throttling of Miami in 2020 where they dropped 60+. Can’t believe she stayed with me.

I was there for Middle Tennessee. I was there for GT last year. It’s been some dark days. FIU and La Tech.

It’s been a hard decade plus of canes football. Saturday didn’t earn us anything. It was 1 game to start the season. VS probably a really really bad UF team. Enough X and O talk has been said and I don’t need to harp on it anymore. But as videos come out and I think back about the game, the auro of this team is what makes me excited and reminds me of why I became a fan 15+ years ago.

Swag
This term is almost cringy, now that I’m 31. But I think all Canes fans agree, this team nearly invented it years ago. It’s not wearing a prop or talking ****. It’s a presence and demeanor you carry about yourself. You know you’re better than the player in front of you, and walk and talk like it. Cam talking **** before snapping it, the gator chop and thumbs down. Not much angers me more than the U down. Rutgers was doing it last year. Rutgers! It felt like this team will make anyone regret doing that again. Saturday, this team carried a demeanor that was reminiscent of good old days. Talked that ****, and backed it up physically.

Head Man
I’ve been a starch supporter of Mario through the games. GT was inexcusable. And I never didn’t acknowledge that. But in my opinion, and I said it a few times, If Mario can’t bring us back to relevance, nobody can. Nobody cares more about making this team good more than him. No coach in America probably would have or will work as hard as him. It was almost, it HAS TO WORK OUT. The post game speech from him. Him telling fans to stop chanting “Mario” and to chant “Canes”. Him breaking the gator chomp. Him grabbing players and going to celebrate with fans on the sidelines. His post game interview. It was some great validation to why I felt he was the only guy that could bring us back. He cares. He deserves as much credit as anyone IMO.

Players
Guys like Meesh Powell and Alderman telling recruits “we run Miami” “come to the U” embody the culture of the team. Transfer portal era is tricky. Football is more a “Me” sport than ever. I don’t think I need to speak more on how telling it is for guys here only 2-6 months to do something like that.

Week 1
Week ones are ugly. Almost all teams in the country have ugly execution. Pre snap penalties, personal issues, missed assignments, missed tackles, etc. the normal execution and game flow items are hard. They take time. Almost every team in the country has to settle in to playing football. Look at Oregon vs Idaho. Ohio state first half vs Akron. Michigan vs Frenso State. That was cleanest game I have seen from Miami, probably in my lifetime. And it was week one! On the road. In “hTe sWaMP” vs “sEc”. Very very promising

All that said, we haven’t done ****. We have a LONG season. And we have a lot more to prove. But that was a game I have waited for, and waited a long time for. I’m sure many here have waited even longer. For the first time in a while, we aren’t the laughing stock of Sunday and Monday. With all that being said, let’s pack the rock. These kids deserve it after Saturday. Cheers to 2024! Go Canes!
