Observations on the Va Tech Game

I was at the game. There were no positives to take from it.

New QB did have a ton of talent running the ball but he couldn't hit the broad side of a barn throwing it. They never adjusted to that and we allowed them to run it down our throat all game.

Team looked unmotivated, just waiting for something good to happen instead of doing everything they could to actually be the one to do it.

Comeback was great, it was aincredible to watch. But there was no reason to ever be in that positiion against that sorry *** team,

If the coaches can't get their guys motivated from second one of the game, step aside and bring someone in who can.

My thoughts are why do you think Art Kehoe wants to come back? Why no mention of penalties which in my opinion was a KEY element to our loss and for that matter the entire season. I agree with many of your points especially with Nkosi. It seems like Williams had a sore shoulder and maybe that contributed to his poor play but Nkosi looked like the man yesterday. IT'S HARD TO UNDERSTAND HOW UM CAN CONTINUALLY SHOOT ITSELF IN THE FOOT WITH STUPID MINDLESS PENALTIES THAT COST US GAMES. Say what you want but I have watched and attended UM games since 1983 and this team is the most poorly coached team I have ever seen including Richt, Randy, and Golden. The 15 yard penalty after the score to tie the game was SIMPLY UNACCEPTABLE. You can't win games like that but you can sure lose them and that's what happened. If I was Manny I would fire Blake and take over the defense for the rest of the season. Baxa certainly seems to be a head case and should be replaced.

We can’t give the defense slack on this one, sorry. Top defenses step up. The defense folded every opportunity it had to show it had a backbone. In the 4th quarter they should have made the stop. At some point in the first half even with bad field position they should have held Virgina Tech to a field goal. Virginia Tech also had an 8 and 12 play drive for touchdowns early on against this defense.

Glossing over a gutless slow unmotivated defense is a no for me. Virginia Tech is not a good offense.

The defense stinks. Yes we turned the ball over BUT how many stops did they get after those turnovers?

Every time we needed to make a stop - V Tech made a play/made the right call. They knew what we were going to run on defense. I’m sorry - that’s BAD COACHING.

Tired of Manny making excuses. Our Defense ALWAYS folds when we need them to step up.

The motivation part is the scariest part for me.

This team went toe to toe with Florida in the first game. They have clawed and fought only to lose games late against North Carolina, and Virginia Tech. They also barely show up to large parts of games. We have guys like Parrot and Murphy (Walk ons) getting the ball in games.

I worry the coaching staff in their attempt to remove “the disease” and “create competition” has discovered a bunch of players don’t care, don’t buy into the staff’s plans, don’t compete, and don’t want to get better. And I fear the number of players with that attitude is much larger than any of us would guess.

I sit 11 rows behind our bench. It was ugly on that sideline in the second quarter. The worst I've seen here in years.

That's a frightening thought.

Baxa is horrible but, had he made the PAT, I'd still have had zero confidence our D could stop them. And VT is a BAD team.

One of the INT’s was in the end zone so they had to go 80 yards...on none of the INT’s did they have to go less than 35-40 yards and he’s still blaming the offense for half the points VT scored lmao

Tough loss but the team fought hard to overcome a terrible start. Perry's play energized the offense. The Baxa missed PAT was a huge factor...not just in terms of the scoreboard but momentum.

Perry should be the starter at QB. The offense was far more effective with Perry at the helm...and not just because of the INTs Jarren threw. JT4, Wiggins, Brevin (even more so than usual) and others were engaged and a meaningful part of the offense with Perry slinging it. If you want a QB that is great at hitting stationary targets in practice, Jarren is the man. If you want a QB that is a gamer, has velocity on his throws and is willing to push the ball downfield (and capable of that), then Perry is the man.

Perry threw for over 420 yards in about three quarters of play. He showed serious competitive spirit & the ability to operate effectively behind a porous OL. He has better pocket presence & more experience. In my opinion, Perry showed greater fight. I hope Perry will continue to mature & show better leadership going forward (no more embarrassing posts on social media etc). If he shows better judgment off the field and works on limiting his errors on the field, Perry could be a very effective QB for us. The offense clearly responded to Perry playing QB.

Prior to today, Jarren was accurate on short & intermediate routes but was struggling with the deep ball. Against Va Tech, he struggled with virtually all of his throws. Jarren doesn't have great pocket presence & he doesn't seem to inspire his teammates as much as Perry. The offense actually seems a little lethargic with Jarren running it. I think Jarren needs a much stronger OL & running game to be highly effective. Jarren may develop & become more dynamic with time but as of today, it is clear that Perry gives us the best chance to win (particularly as we have a porous OL).

Baxa: how many games do we have to lose due to missing PATs and short FGs before the coaches wake up & realize that unfortunately it isn't working out with Bubba. This isn't some overreaction to one missed PAT. There were trouble signs last season, his HS make % was low and this entire season to date has been nothing short of disastrous. We have another K on the roster. We have tons of people on campus that play soccer. Hedley probably can kick FGs & PATs better than Baxa (as he's almost not making anything at this point). If the back-up kicker isn't better than Baxa (who isn't making anything -- even basic little short kicks), then he shouldn't be on the roster either. If Hedley isn't the answer at Kicker (and they should definitely give that a serious try in practice), they need to have an extended try-out and open the competition to walk-ons. Many people play soccer on campus. There are also plenty of students from places like England, Sweden & Australia that can kick short FGs & PATs better than what is happening now. It literally cannot get worse as we are now making nothing. Keep Baxa for the 40+ yarders & kicking off. But please fix this problem this week. Have Diaz, Patke & maybe one other coach spend a whole afternoon watching different options at K....FIX THIS NOW BEFORE THE WHOLE SEASON GOES DOWN THE DRAIN!!!

DL: Much improved when Rousseau, Hill, Nesta, Miller & Garvin were playing. More athletic & capable of getting after the QB. We have some good players on DL. The right players need the bulk of the snaps going forward. Let's stop shooting ourselves in the foot. Patch would get trucked by UVA...book it.

Deejay made some key plays & has a big heart. Very happy he's a Cane. Great leader. That being said, our base running game needs way more pop. Excluding his one long run of 62 yards, Deejay had four (4) yards on 5 carries. Lorenzo is healthy now and we need him to play...and play heavily. With Perry at QB, JT4 re-energized and Lorenzo getting significant carries, this offense could finally realize its full potential. We are seriously missing elite speed at the RB position. Lorenzo will bring that. HE NEEDS TO PLAY OR WE MAY END UP WITH A SUB-.500 RECORD.

OL: Butch Barry needs to step it up. Other teams have young players on their OL and they seem to do just fine. UF had young guys on their OL. Va Tech did too. The Barry hire legitimately doesn't seem to be working out. If I were Manny, I would place a call to Art Kehoe and make a switch. I would also make OL recruiting the major priority for the next couple of years. Manny will not succeed as HC at Miami unless the play of the OL improves significantly....and fast. Every loss hurts recruiting which will just perpetuate the cycle. Manny needs to make tough decisions here and get the OL fixed as fast as possible or he will fail.

Defense: the score doesn't really tell the tale with respect to the performance of the Defense. Most of the points yielded came in the first quarter & were a result of the INTs thrown by Jarren. Va Tech had only 17 points after the first quarter. Yes, there were some coverage busts (maybe in part due to communication & a new DB being introduced to the mix) but overall the majority of the points given up were a function of turnovers (especially the INTs).

We have sufficient talent on our roster to have won all of the games we've played. At minimum, we should be 4-1. We haven't been using our best weapons effectively and it has cost us. Special teams & missed kicks have been a huge factor too. The coaches need to assess the performance of every player at each position & maximize the use of their best players going forward. If they don't we may end up with a sub-.500 record. It simply doesn't have to be this way. We have the talent to beat every team on the schedule. The coaches need to up their game & put our best players on the field & in a position to succeed.

Your thoughts?
Good post op. Guys didn’t give up, which in the past would have been a given. Perry has to be given chance.
DC should have adjusted sooner to their QB.
Too many penalties. Not scoring at the goalie in 2nd.
Baxa blowing it. Just too many mistakes.

Wasn’t motivation issue. Our OC andDC were completely skunked in 1st qrt. Bud was calling every play before snapped from sideline, had his guys in position.
Our dc coached as if he didn’t know their back up qb was a runner. It was coaching mixed with Jarren gifting them 3 picks in 10 min. Not motivation.
If anything, one positive is they didn’t give up and kept fighting.

Perry somehow found how to get Jeff Thomas the ball. Somehow found how to connect on deep balls. Offense looked more explosive with Perry when it comes to stretching the field. Perry a gunslinger and Jarren is a game manager. One is good to have when you have a good defense and oline in which you control the game. The other is when you have average defense and *** oline you can’t control the game so you need a player that’ll take chances and get a spark. We need the latter.

whats prolly the most frustrating with the perry williams stuff is that enos ran mostly gun with perry, but refuses to do it with JW (even tho JW hasn't run under center since he was a little kid). enos did do it with perry a few times and ended poorly for the most part. none of the QBs can throw a deep ball well and it doesnt seem to be a QB issue but a coaching issue bc we know they have arm talent and we know they can throw it. whichever QB we go with the rest of the way (i like perry and williams but think NP (while **** make those killer mistakes as we saw yesterday with the called back pick), does take chances, but it wont matter if Enos is deadset on his offense. the coaching has been awful and has been the one of the biggest and most disappointing things this year.

Ugly like they were mad or just didn't care?

part of it falls on the OC. if we ran the spread that we did against UNC, i think both QBs would be successful. under perry, we went back to the gun. we've seen JW do well in that similar style against UNC. whichever starts friday better be playing in that offense and not what Enos likes
