Merriwether was bad against FAMU. If you struggle there, then I don't know what to say. He's a long way off. I do like his frame, though.

Some add'l commentary. A lot of folks have been claiming Kinsler portaling to Ole Miss was a big loss. Whatever the reason, injury, physical shape, ability he hasn't been particularly good at Ole Miss through the first three games.

Would he have been better at RT than SJ has been at LG, allowing McCoy to move to LG? Certainly possible. But not clearly so.

He's been injured on and off this season. He went down and was walked off the field a couple games ago (Louisville). I think he was out for injury in week 2, but I'd have to check. But, I 100% watched him against LSU in the first half. I key'd on him. Like I said, he looked less agile than I remember and more like a Guard. I guess I can pull up screenshot evidence. Ha.

Someone did a film breakdown on Seaton this year and he’s got some ugly snaps. Very inconsistent and not worth the $6m or whatever LSU is paying him

Samson and McCoy look great at tackle. We needed one or two more bodies on the inside

I've actually always thought he's a Guard, but maybe that's my bias. If you keep Kinsler and try him at RT, maybe it works out and maybe not, but what if he slides to RG in the Cooper role? Then you can have Buchanan fighting it out at LG. I think we were one decision away from a much better situation at OL overall. Maybe go get a Center. Maybe pay up for Kinsler. Maybe something else. But, clearly, something else if we don't want to give Cantwell his early shot at Tackle.

This line is elite at pass blocking but they are not good at run blocking. Every run turns into a rugby scrum. Every run is muddy, and that's why Fletcher and Brown are better in this run scheme than Lyle (who is much more talented). The LG and C positions have taken turns struggling. The predictable play calling hurts the line, of course, but it doesn't seem like the OL is creating any holes. We need an experienced run game coordinator to come in and help Dawson modernize this run game.

For all the deficiencies of the run game last year they were still massive humans. The interior this year can't block, misses assignments and they are small.

I believe there are ways to play to their "strengths" by running laterally and getting them on the move, still at the end of the day we are just not big enough there as it stands. It's on tape clear as day, would be negligence not to make changes...we'll see this week.

Sure enough.

PFF showed Terez Davis getting all 77 snaps and I assumed they were all at LT since that's his primary position (screenshot below). But obviously that wasn't the case. Hard to tell but seems like that was T Davis at RT in this pic.

Check out the full game. At least the first half:



He had a pretty good rep on 3rd and 10 at LT in the first series. Watch him in the 2nd series, also at LT, on 2nd and 10 against Patrick Payton. Those flashes are at least interesting. There are others. Again, he's clearly imperfect, but we're discussing the hypothetical of a domino effect that would have gotten us an upgrade over what we're watching at our LG position.

The floor of last year’s line is way higher than this year’s. If we can just get the floor of last year’s we would have a top7 oline

You're right. I just watched the first couple drives and fast forwarded at different points in the game and I coincidentally saw him out there every time I pressed pause.

As a board, we gotta get into the habit of watching football games/plays. Stats-based assumptions lead to faulty conclusions.
 
I know it’s a mortal sin to say anything negative about Mirabal but since he’s been the OL coach at Miami he’s had more whiffs in recruiting than hits. I haven’t verified by looking at every class but it sure does feel that way, especially if you exclude the portal additions which were necessary to compensate for the high school recruiting whiffs.

Just rewatched the first three series of Ole Miss' game against LSU.

Kinsler took every single rep at LT. He had perhaps one shaky pass pro rep with an inside move, though Chambliss likes to drift a lot and flushes himself out. He had one shaky rep in the run game in the red zone on the third series, where he initially beat the DE, but didn't sustain and the DE slipped inside. Other than that, 3-4 excellent reps and the rest solid. In these 3 series, way more recognition of passing defenders in pass pro than what we've seen out of our current iOL.

Watch for yourselves.
 
Mario needs to fully embrace who we are as a team this year. We have major issues along the OL, and anyone that didnt see this coming just had their head in the sand. That all said, we have been all right in pass protection which lends itself to our strength. We are capable of putting up 40 against anyone in the country. We need to embrace that fully. SJ needs to go, and Rodriguez isnt very good either but he has at least been serviceable in pass pro. Keep Mensah upright and go full video game mode.

I mean every O line coach has more misses than hits that's the nature of O Line recruiting. Like if you can point me to the OL coach who is getting more hits than this I'll hear it but, in 22 you get Coop and McCoy who are hits, In 23 you get Maugioa and Samson who are hits and in 24 you get Bell who is a hit. 25 Isn't good but in 26 you have Cantwell, Congdon and Ervin who look good as freshman. Like it's not unassailable or anything but that's pretty solid.

Think you missed the point; Coulda, shoulda, woulda; but we didn't and here we are. Plus you can bring in a couple of great O-lineman on a front and if they don't play well as a group they can still be below average - no guarantees. What's worse to me is moving them around - seldom works well. Set the group pre-season, let them play together and gel as a unit.

At least (so far) they've passed protected well enough against (as I said) average or below D fronts. That's what the staff priority was/is- protect the portal investments we've made in the last three QBs. They are a below average run blocking line, and that may very well become apparent in the near future. But last year's OL wasn't exactly known for their run blocking. Pitch and catch is what we do best.
