Number 1 player in 2026 class Jacob Lombard commits to Miami

Who cares if they don't even play here tho man
If I had a dollar for every player that was never going to make it to campus that made it to campus, I wouldn’t be rich, but I’d have a few dollars. There’s nothing wrong with signing the long shots. Where we got into trouble when JD was recruiting coordinator in the early 2010s was that we weren’t signing the next tier of player to fill the gap when they signed.

The recent trends seems to be the top tier HS players never show up on campus but that next tier is a good 50/50 and if you accumulate enough of these players you start to have a legit CWS team. Just look at all the big schools, they get 3-4 guys like that every year.

Very unlikely, but its good to see we can still get commits from the top guys
Ya, while it's grand, here are some of the commits we had that never made it to campus IIRC: A Rod, Castellanos, Yelich, the late Jose Fernandez, Correa, Luzardo, etc. It's like a Who's Who of modern day MLB studs.

These kids have to sign w a Power 4 team to give them a little extra negotiating leverage, I suspect.

I thought Fernandez was USF. I know Volstad was committed to us, as was Henry Owens regarding pitchers in the mid-aughts to mid-teens period.

I really think they should enact a rule where a HS player has to declare for draft. This way any player who "commits" actually goes to campus. Committing to a school you'll never attend is pointless imo. it's a waste of time and resources for an instagram post.

You are right on Fernandez ... my bad. But he was as likely to play there as he was for us, going 14th overall in 1st round of his draft year. So sad to be gone so young. I had just watched an interview of him very close to his death - seemed like a great young man and very grounded.

Just shows how one bad decision can ruin or end your life, esp. for young men who don't make the greatest decisions to begin with no matter what their situation.

Tell that to ARod who committed, never attended, but has donated well over $1 mm to UM baseball is in the process of laying out even more money. He films his “how to hit” videos from the cages at The Light.

Obviously most of these guys never make it campus, but you take them just in case. Giancarlo Stanton and Jay Bruce committed to Tulane. No one thought they were coming, but you don't turn them down. In 1999 Casey Daigle (famous for having a hot softball playing wife) was a first rd. draft pick. He committed to Tulane and actually made it to campus. He was in the Tulane baseball clubhouse up until the last minute while he was negotiating a contract with the Diamondbacks. He eventually signed with Arizona, and tried to take Tulane baseball swag with him too, but that's why you take these guys. You never know if what they'll do.

Fair points in the last two posts, and w the risk of injury their senior year and the new era of NIL $$, I guess it makes sense on top of the street cred it gives the program. And it's a free option, so, "why not" must be the thinking.

Yeah this is nothing but a bonus. The risk you run is banking on these kids being lock's. I remember at the tail end of the Morris years have monster class rankings only to never seen the guys, false flag. Good recognition, positive momentum, national conversation in recruiting......... i see nothing bad here

We have shifted mindsets imo, or we just can't land these elite elite guys like we used to back in the day

I will go with both: the majority of our classes, the last two years have been good prospects who could of gone to the MLB if they had better SR years or just weren't the top-end elite HS guys that get drafted. Back in the day, I would say it was easier for Miami to land these recruits because we were not too far away from winning a natty/making it to Omaha consistently.

Jenni Finch! Umpired a game of hers in an exhibition. Lisa Fernandez started in the circle.

Finch was HUGE.
