Now that we're in the offseason, I have a question about Mario

I love the guy and have been rooting for him. He's definitely the right man for this job and he has us positioned as an elite team because of his decisions, leadership and vision.

One of the best things about Mario has been his willingness to make changes when he sees that something is hurting his team. This attribute in an overall sense, is what got us to this game tonight!

So... the refs in most of our games usually call uneven games to our detriment. We can postulate why that is, and while I don't think tonight is an example of that, we are constantly committing penalties.

I'm not sure what you as a HC do to change that behavior, but we've been hurt by, and lost games, because of it. I mean, for instance, if we don't keep two of IU's scoring drives alive because of penalties, we probably win that game.

I'm too tired to look it up, but my understanding is that Mario's Oregon teams also committed an inordinate amount of penalties. There are rankings for these things, so clearly, other teams make it a habit of not committing costly penalties.

Anyway, we win our 6th national title tonight if our guys showed more discipline and self control. So, this one thing (penalties) would've eliminated our two regular season losses and would've had us going undefeated tonight. Doesn't seem like something that would cost a lot to fix since some of the better schools who do it, don't have our budget.

That one thing - not committing a lot of penalties and certainly not at crucial times - could take us all the way to next year's national title game. Mario states all the time that they need to get it corrected, but his teams always don't correct it, except for a few games like OSU and TAMU. And, no way we win those games if we commit a bunch of penalties. Whenever he gets it corrected for a couple of games, the team backslides.

Anyway, that's it. Now, that he's built up the team's talent level, is he willing to take practical steps to make not committing penalties part of the team's DNA. We'll win more games if he does, maybe even a natty. I just hope that he makes it systemic, permanent, long lasting priority.
