Notre Dame Opts Out of Bowl Game

First of all, let me state that I am saddened by the current state of affairs as it pertains to bowl games. I enjoyed the buildup, anticipation, and pageantry of the events for the vast majority of my life.

It was 3 hours of free publicity for the teams and their league, a nice day out for fans who can make it, and an event for the players. It was a nice capstone, a last hurrah, for the guys who get reps but will be going pro in something other than playing football. It was an opportunity for coaches to get to know some of their "next guys up."

Unfortunately, the current bowl scene is the logical result of, first, the transfer portal, then the college football playoff. To some extent, NIL is also an issue, but that goes both ways. NIL can incentivize playing in a bowl game.

The Covid year of 2020 just added accelerant to the flame. The breadth and depth of opt-outs made the bowl season impossible. I remember when we had to withdraw our own participation in 2021 for lack of players.

But I think to the years of playing in the Pinstripe Bowl in particular. It's freezing cold, we're 7-5, and clearly the vast majority of the players just didn't want to be there at all. In retrospect, we shouldn't have bothered.

K-State, Iowa State, and ND have now opted out of this year's games. I'm undecided as to whether I agree with it, but I do understand it. The dudes going to the NFL almost certainly won't play, for injury risk. The dudes portaling are leaving. Lame duck staffs are better off inking their next job.

I'm one of those people who really enjoyed "the most wonderful time of the year" watching the bowl games. But there's no pretending that it's what it used to be.

I don't know how to "fix it," and I'm not sure it can be. Sad, but I've accepted it.
ND is just taking their ball and going home. sour grapes.

I understand KState and Iowa state more; they will have new coaches, etc. That's alot to ask of a current coach who will be moving on.
I feel for the kids, though.

Finebaum was partially correct because their fans are the worst but he left out the part where NOTRE lame players and coaches are some straight up *******. Soft af

I understand their gripe but this is poor form by ND.

Sadly, college football cannot be fixed until the collective of teams come together to run the sport together. No more "my conference gets special treatment" or Notre Dame's elitist bull****.

This is great, 1 month of extra practice down the drain for them.

I read something about them doing a lot of load management for the starters with development focus for the younger guys during last years post season. They were already partially planning for the next year.

We play them game 1, can’t hurt.

Well boo f’n hoo for nd. Don’t necessarily disagree on bowl game though all except playoff bowls should cancelled. Meaningless game with all nfl hopefuls and portal bound guys opting out.

We don’t play ND game 1…

I have attended a random bowl game with some buddies every year for 20 years. (The first was not random. It was our brutal loss to LSU in the Peach Bowl.) Sometimes they were big games; some years they were not. Sometimes they were Canes games, most years not. This year is not a big game, as we're going to the Myrtle Beach Bowl - Kennesaw State vs. Western Michigan. We've done this because it's fun to travel to different parts of the country with our buddies, but also because we love the old version of college football. It's a unique sport with fun rivalries, history, and culture. I loved that games mattered to the teams and to the fans, even if they weren't a big deal when it comes to rankings and national titles. Bowls were one of the fun and unique aspects of the sport - a chance for the team to travel to a new place (and the fans), to play against a new team, to participate in all the silly, non-football activities that come with a bowl, etc. So it makes me sad that bowls are dying. Not sure how many more I'll get be able to go to. Maybe we can start picking fun regular-season rivalry games to attend instead. I do get it though. It's evolution for the sport. The coaches are moving to new jobs immediately; some kids are transferring immediately; other kids would opt out anyway to preserve their health and get ready for the draft. There won't be any more non-playoff bowls in a couple of years is my prediction. If it gives us an exciting playoff (with fair selection process) and legit national champions, I'll take it I guess. But it is sad to lose part of the history of college football.
