Notre Dame On-Field Breakdown Thread

This is what I worry about, that Mario and Dawson go into a shell and try and go conservative without Mali instead of going right at them. In fact, I'd be shocked if they didn't try and bully ball them instead of letting Mensah go win this.

Have they been conservative to start a big game this year? IIRC, they've been pretty non-conservative to start just about every game with their opening drives. They may go conservative later on, certainly and it may necessitate, but in general, I think we've been pretty good about it. Now, with Mali out, we'll see.

All of the worries shouldn’t be on the offense guys..losing mali is already devastating but even with him if we don’t defend way better than what we have shown we will lose

I don’t think we will go into a shell and play bully ball, not with Mensah. They know what we have. Run the pill enough to keep them honest of course, but let Mensah cook.

It’s the other side that we should be focusing on. Are our guys going to tackle? Especially on the perimeter?

The staff is going to want to bully ND and wear them out. I don't see that philosophy ever changing. ND is soft, so let's beat them up

I think we definitely will open it up the 1st half… the 2nd will depend on how the defense is playing. If their stout and not getting driven down for 7s I think we might go into clock drain mode running the ball like we did against Clemson.

I think Dawson will run the same offense they planned to run. Mensah might not have the confidence to make some tight window or anticipation throws initially, but he'll still have Upshaw and Barkate. Jacobs has been making plays, along with Loftin, now that he's healthy.

Special Teams needs to steal either points or consistent field position. Which game was it this year that we consistently started behind the 20yd line?

Also will be interesting to see how ND plays. The rumor is that Freeman is taking over defensive playcalling duties since Ash has been a mess. Freeman supposedly is a heavy man kind of guy so passing game to Lofton and the RBs should be there for the taking (plus Mensah runs).

Just completed the Navy game. I've now watched every single snap of ND's season except the Rice game, which i skipped altogether. I feel like I've watched their plays (because sometimes I watch a play 5-6 times) more than I've watched us. I feel disgusting.

Re: Navy game, CJ Carr was out of sync in some of his deeper passes. Something to look for. That's two games in a row - BYU and Navy - where I saw him miss throws I wouldn't have expected. Hope we're not his "get right" game.

Part of the reason i hate our bend but don't break but actually just break defense is it lets qbs get into a rhythm.

For Carr, it's even more important. Dude is in love with his presnap reads and they're usually good.

He threw 49 passes against BYU and had an average completion percentage. What was the story there? Did they shut down the run game and force ND to throw? Was the coverage really good?

It was a totally out of sync game, IMO. For example, they easily drove down field at the end of the first half and Carr randomly fumbled on a spike play at like the 2 yard line. They had drops. One in the middle of the field that stands out in memory (I think it was Greathouse). They threw to the TE on corner routes with very little accuracy or sense. Carr missed a WIDE OPEN STREAKING Faison earlier in the game down the seam. Easy TD. Just bad throw. They got themselves into strange scenarios and didn't stick with the run as much as I would have if I were them. On many plays, they absolutely washed BYU's DL, but then went away from the run. Very strange game.
