I think what he did at Rutgers speaks for itself. Led that program from a doormat to one that was able to join the Big 10! Had them good every year towards the end of his tenure and was even top 10 at one point...AT FREAKING RUTGERS!!! He produced a bunch of NFL talent including Ray Rice, Kenny Britt, Logan Ryan, Mohammed Sanu, etc. AT RUTGERS!!! Look at them now without him! He is also a very tough, defensive minded coach who would make us into a great defensive team by year 2.

Look at his records at RUTGERS!!! That's better than what we did over that period minus one bad year in 2010. He also was 5-1 in bowl games, which is the best indicator of true coaching ability since the extra time allows teams to fully prepare.

AKA once Miami and VT left he started winning more games?

- During those 7 years, he went 25-24 in conference play (sound like someone we know?)
- During his tenure he NEVER won the Big East

Just for fun, here are some of his quality wins during his "last 7 seasons"

2005: Villanova, Buffalo and Navy
2006: Ohio, Howard and Navy
2007: Buffalo, Northfolk State, Navy, Army and Ball State
2008: Morgan State and Army (he lost his other OOC to Fresno State and Navy)
2009: Howard, FIU, Texas Southern and Army (he lost to Syracuse who went 4-8)
2010: Northfolk State, FIU and Army (he lost to Tulane who went 4-8)
2011: North Carolina Central, Ohio, Navy and Army

Sarcasm Alert: So his impressive 56-33 (25-24) included wins over 24 schools that are non-BCS. He is not a good coach and should be at a sub-par program.

Agreed. I like the solutions proposed but your premise is that the BORG are incompetent micro managers. So why would anything change unless the composition of the BORG changes? We have a different president but no one has a read on him yet. We don't know what his input is going to be in all of this. We have over a decade of data. You have the same people making the hire unless James is shown the door as well, at which I would be surprised. I am not encouraged. These fools aren't even going to consider hiring Butch, which is about as no brainer as it gets. Thoughtful post.

I agree the admin is the real one to be at blame here. I'm tired of UM blaming fans and the kids for our ***** performance's over the years. What a joke. I hope with the new President something will change (Not getting my hopes up).

Schiano at Rutgers (minus the first two years that skewed the data): 65-47= .58
Butch at UNC (minus first year that skewed the data): 24-15= .62

So the data says Butch did marginally better at UNC than Schiano at Rutgers, however it really took Schiano 4 years to make Rutgers a solid program. After the first four years where they improved each year,

Schiano went: 56-33= .63

This included an 11-2 year and a 5-1 bowl record. Not sure why you think Schiano is a bad coach. The data says otherwise...Before Schiano got to Rutgers, they went 1-10 in '99 and 3-8 in '00. He took a sorry *** program and made them relevant nationally and in their conference. I know everyone loves Butch (and I wouldn't mind him either), but Schiano is a good choice too!
 
I've seen this post several times but yes everything changes by firing Golden. Bad hires were made under Shalala but she is gone now. We've never had the most supporting Admin but with all the pressure from the fans, I can very well see them spending more this time just to be done with it. Not to mention there is a lot of coaches making less than Golden that are way better. This is college football and a good coach can overcome a lot of shortcomings.

The data isn't skewed, you just omit some of it.

So what do we know about Schiano:

1. Never won the conference,

2. 28-48 Record in conference and 68-67 overall, and

3. This is all after Miami and VT left the conference.

If you want to omit seasons, fine. Let's omit the first four seasons. Here are some of his impressive wins

As for comparing Butch to Schiano, I am not sure why that is relevant for whether Schiano is a good coach or not. Greg Schiano had one decent season, that year he didn't even win the Big East or make a BCS Game.

I think having S. Fla ties is extrememly overrated. I mean Golden had no S. fla ties and he has done pretty well recruiting here. And being a Miami guy is also overrated. Once again Golden was not a Miami guy and recruited well.

S. Fla ties and being a Miami guy can go to the assistant coaches. Fuuuuccckkk you can hire an offensive genius as your HC, have him the call the plays and keep Coley as OC. Use him like Jimbo used him. There that's your guy with S. Fla ties and a Miami guy
