We all know safety play can make or break a defense, especially in an attacking 4-3 scheme where the seams are constantly being tested by one of the most underrated variables in an offense, the tight end. Lets also remember that we play in the ACC, where the spread formation has become more, and more prevalent. One on one matchups are easier than ever to exploit.

With that being said, REPLACE JERMAIN GRACE WITH JAMAL CARTER. Lets review why this shouldn't be outside the realm of Diaz's consideration. First, Jamal Carter is bigger than Jermaine Grace. I don't care who weighs more, Jamal Carter eats rocks and sh**ts lightning bolts for sunday brunch. Jermaine Grace could move over to the SAM, where I read yesterday that Diaz prefers a light/mobile SAM backer anyway. Second, Jamal Carter is horrendous in pass coverage. If you know anything about football, you'd see that Jamal has the mind/spirit/tenacity of a linebacker rather than a ball hawking safety. Mark Barron, who is in the same mold of Jamal Carter, was just paid 40 million dollars to patrol the box, cover tight ends, and knock slobber around. Jaquan Johnson, who has shown a knack for the ball, would be my first choice to replace Carter. Johnson is quick, cerebral, and it has been routinely implied that he has the "it factor". I think Diaz is being progressive with his personnel, but I feel like it is SO OBVIOUS that Jamal Carter is not a natural safety. Seriously, release that beast and drop him down in the box.

And since this is my first post, who's the donkey that's going to feel victimized first?

Jamal is a violent hitter and should play close to the line. Wouldn't be a bad idea I don't suppose. I'd say do this move if pickney or whoever starts at will linebacker is not playing at a high level

Fyi... Jermaine Grace is already the SAM LB...

When we face the spread, we'd likely slide an extra DB onto the field, which will make 5 DB's aka Nickel aka 5 cents...

Jaquan Johnson is likely to be the guy in that role, as he's the best Safety we have in Man coverage.

Jamal Carter still have to prove that he can be trusted, as I've seen plenty of mistakes by this guy. Wouldn't be surprise if Robert Knowles gets a bunch of playing time, if Jamal doesn't get his act together.

The SAM in Manny Diaz's system is responsible for a wide variety of tasks and has to be your most versatile player. They will be used to cover TE and slot, set the edge, and blitz. That's why Grace is at SAM. You said it yourself, Carter isn't that good in pass coverage.

I think he's better than given credit for in that area though. Al's system kept him on his heels trying to read the offense before making a play. You have to process everything that happened to dictate your assignment on that play and he couldn't do it fast enough to be in a good position to make a play. It didn't help that we rotated our safeties more than anyone I've ever seen and as soon as he would get comfortable he was out of the game.

Playing a simpler defense, being a centerfield type safety/headhunter will help him. Also, playing 75% or more of the snaps will result in much more consistency. Let him light up a WR/RB/TE across the middle one time and it makes his job that much easier the rest of the game. They won't test him again.

Theories must be tested in an uncontrolled environment (aka game). Until we see how all of these kids perform under new coaches and defensive sets we cannot propose moving guys in any manner this staff hasn't determined, having seen them over the spring and into fall. I do agree Carter's ball skills were not on display in goldofritos retreat scheme, but this staff may have coached him? I haven't heard any comments from the staff about Carter's inabilities to play the ball. All signs point to him being a starter. Summary: lets wait the first few games to make judgement and recommend position shifts.

It makes sense to me also, he has a linebackers mentality

If you went to FSU and can figure out who this is I'll show you a better board to post on.
