I was in Syracuse once, and it was legit one of the most depressing towns I’ve ever been in. Maybe because it was November and it was cold, perpetually overcast, and drab, gray, grimy and dull…and having said that, I’d make the same decision to go there vs FSU.

It just goes to show what a shītshow FSU is. Going to take a long time for them to recover.

In the Shannon years, we lost a couple of kids to USF when they were at their peak (Webster and Barrington). When he was fired, we lost Bridgewater to Louisville and several others before Golden was hired. That's the only time I ever remember us losing kids to what we would consider a lesser school like Cuse. FSU is in worse pain than we were even at our worst. And it took us over a decade more to dig out of that hole.

I know, I know, Cuse just "beat" us for Calvin Russell last cycle. Do you see anyone with any regrets about that? The word was we wanted him. But did we "really" "want" him? I think we set a NIL budget cap on him well below what Fran dished out and let him decide.

Part of the calculation here is that they will actually be favored once they go 3-0. And being favored, they will surely win most of those games.

I mean, it’s just simple logic.
 
They really believed they were right on the edge of becoming elite. But when you go all in like that
(stadium upgrades, resign Mike, football facility building) and it falls flat your program is cooked for years.
 
I don’t claim to be the NIL modern college football as a business expert. I’m pretty dumb. I also like to listen to the mopey FSU podcasts. They are down bad.

What’s most interesting to me is that when you listen to these Noles talk it’s like they are talking about some other sport with a different structure. They constantly talk about “the cap” and “rev share” and other restrictive things that from what I can tell don’t really exist. It’s very weird.

We lost a wide receiver recruit to Syracuse in 2005. The year that we had no wide receivers in the class at all.

The transfer portal makes things different, but even presuming that FSU has absolute top tier NIL spending the turnaround would take three years at minimum. You need a blend of high school and transfer portal players.

Considering we have at least a top 10 (probably better) NIL budget it still took Mario three seasons to go from a 7 win program to a 10 win program. They’re way worse than we ever were under Manny. It would take them two or three years just to get back to being a 7/8 win program.

I think that is all a coping mechanism to discuss caps and revenue sharing because none of that impacts player compensation. NIL is not really a college thing. It is just another term for marketing/branding.
And people all have a legal right to make money from their marketing/branding. It is really that simple. Pretty soon we will likely drop the NIL moniker and just call it what it is. And as with all things in a free market economy, there are winners and losers.
