People panic. They see someone have a little success and are afraid to lose them because they doubt their own ability to find a suitable replacement. Guys who believe in their own abilities don't mind letting guys leave. It's why Bellicheck traded vets for draft picks (Brady also made it easy), Howie Roseman moving on from guys and trusting his draft process and scouts, Kevin O'Connell moving on from QBs, etc. It keeps you from acting foolishly in desperation.
