Tears Nole Tears (“Offcial”)

Remember how active Miami was in the portal at the very beginning and everyone laughed at us… yeah funny how every team uses the portal to fill gaps in their rosters.

I said awhile back that relying on the portal isn’t the gonna be feasible long term that you still need to recruit and develop something Memphis Mike has yet to do…
I'll counter that and say that it might be feasible in at least the medium term. Bill Snyder built a football business model a decade ago on acquiring large amounts of JUCO players. They might not have been as gifted as the five star recruits being signed by Texas, but they were always two years (or more) older in age. With that came two additional years of maturity and S&C. His teams were older and bigger than some of his opponents.

It was very striking when his Kansas State team faced the Miami in 2012. The Hurricanes were at a low water mark in terms of blue chips that year, but even then would have had more talent on paper than Snyder's squad. But Miami's team was very skewed towards first and second year players, while Snyder's were veterans. We got squashed in our worst loss of the season.

The counter to this however is that using transfers as the majority of the roster worked for a time for Snyder. But it meant near continual turnover of the roster and it was predicated on nearby JUCO schools in the vicinity. A Florida State (or a Texas State, which went exclusively transfer portal a year ago and did not sign any high school players) is trying to pull in portal kids from all over. It's not built on relationships with feeder schools like K State. And in the end the portal ended up biting K-State.

FSU had to shut down recruiting after early signing day because they couldn’t afford to keep recruiting until February
America Online disabled their dialup service to FSU’s offices, cutting them off from communications to potential recruits. Efforts to replace them with Compuserve or Mindspring proved fruitless. That sadly is the reason that they stopped recruiting. Norvell is waiting for the announcement that he had mail.
