No Love from our Defense

I’d like to see our CBs play bump more, but perhaps it’s not part of the new crew’s style. I think it’d match well with our DL.
It’s interesting cause we ran so much man last year despite having db’s who couldn’t cover. But Hetherman does prefer zone and limiting long plays from my understanding. However I was impressed with our dbs

Actually looking forward to a rewatch on defense for the first time in a long time

Just on the first emotional watch I thought it was probably Popos best game as a Cane so far but looking forward to checking it more
Yea I have to rewatch. From feeling at game felt like when ND took off cuffs second half they got whatever they wanted. If they ran their backs on edge they could get around, WR running come back routes without a defender near by, QB run working with ease. Seemed like after the Blay penalty they moved ball up and down field TO ME. I have to rewatch because sentiment seems defense played well.

One blown play that went to the TE, penalties gave ND good field position in the game. One of the best games from our DB room in a lonnnng time.

Very impressive
Other than that completely blown play they were never confused. Maybe 2-3 plays they were all
Yelling at each other late. They knew where to go every play

So many things to rewatch, but I usually watch defense from the Safeties in, and I was truly impressed with our overall approach to Jeremiyah Love.

That kid has some elite attributes, and we put him in relative shackles. I’d be surprised if he had another game as statistically poor as this one. It took a whole bunch of sound defense to do it.

Props to Aguirre, who stopped at least two plays out in space that would have likely been 50+ yarders last season. Other LBs filled hard, too.

Props to the DL, who took that overhyped OL and moved them around as they wished.

And, to the DBs. After what we watched last year at Safety, tonight’s game was a breath of fresh air (with a few hiccups) against the run. This group went from running in the wrong direction to looking for contact and gang tackling.
There was one particular play in the second half where Love caught the ball on a shallow out and I thought he was off to the races but Popo was there and made the sure tackle. That was a play that goes for 40+ previous years.

Filled hard eh?

I’ll be surprised if Love lasts the season without a major injury since it appears that his one goal in life is to recreate the Saquon play every time he touches the ball

We have some real solid DBs.

I was pleasantly surprised to see poysner and Fitzgerald in the last series at safety. Big testament to Fitzgerald in his potential - gonna be a good one.

That ND gameplan was highly protective. Extreme reliance on WR screens and quick drops. I have no idea if we’ll have a top pass rush or not, but not a good game to evaluate it. ND mainly played within what I used to call the Patrick Nix rectangle (it has a max height of 12 yards). Even when they broke out of it, it was a quick drop fade route (50/50). Very, very protective of their young QB in the passing game.
I’d argue the exact opposite. Go back and rewatch our DL on passing plays. Bain dominated all night. Blay won most of his reps. Mesidor got better as the game went on. If our guys win like this against that O line, the sky is the limit. It’s gonna take a **** of a game plan to avoid giving up 4+ sacks to us.

Isn’t that what I’m saying? Ha. My post is in response to someone calling for more pressures and sacks. I’m stating those stats were limited by ND’s gameplan.

Along with many others, Blay played great.

There was one play, I think it was a ND 1st down play, where CJ forced from the pocket and rolled to his left. Blay met him and didn’t fall for a ball fake and just kept pursuing him to the sideline.

CJ threw and incomplete pass. Blay showed quickness and great fundamental awareness of the play. It may be ‘kinda a small’ thing but it was a thing of beauty

Either they were overly committed trying to settle in a qb making his first ever start or they knew they wouldn't be able to run against us.

Was so pleasantly surprised with the defense, looked like a proper defense against a very good team. Appeared well coached fairly disciplined, will have to be even more disciplined with a mobile QB, but night and day from last year
