No longer the parent of a UM Recruit

It has been a surreal journey... Shaq's recruitment.. which has now come to an end. One of the first thing coach Richt told Shaq while he was recruiting on behalf of UGA the summer before Shaq's junior year...was the recruiting process will be exciting for you, but you will be happy the day it comes to an end. Well it has now come to an end... and I have to agree with coach Richt... I'm glad it is over. I will miss the excitement of the visits and meeting the other families on the trail... I won't miss opening the mail box and finding it full of recruiting propaganda. I feel I can write a book about this journey... the does and don't of the camp circuit, the visits, the calls and all the people you meet along the way. It saddens me a bit to close that chapter, but I look forward to the years to come. I can remember like it was yesterday coaching Shaq in Pop-Warner and it was yesterday when we drove off campus... starting a new chapter in his life. Since his commitment to the University of Miami.. the summer before his junior year of high school I have been a nervous Nelly following the chaos the ups and downs at the school... the whole time Shaq's dispositions was it will all work. His first offer to play D1 football came from Ron Dugan while he was working for Louisville and his first offer extended by a head coach came from coach Richt while at UGA... it looks like Shaq was right it will all works out. So this is my last post as a parent of a recruit... my next will be as life long fan and the parent of a Miami Hurricane.

I am officially a big fan of Shaq

I think we all thank you for the perspective you bring. Very cool! Also- all us Alums on this board can surely attest that we got quite a good education at UM. It really did teach me about life more than anything... and I am sure it will do the same for Shaq. Different kinda people come outa the U, just check the forbes newest 30-under-30 list (3 UM alum on there I think?). We aint regular thats for sure.

Congrats again!

Fill and Spill Papa Shaq! You filled your son with love and we get to witness spilled Cane love for years to come...Big Congrats!

Job well done. Congrats to you and your wife and Shaq on an incredible accomplishment. And I'll add congrats to your extended family as well. It's Great to Be...!!!

Papa Shaq, when you recounted the reception CMR got during the BTW vs. Raines playoff game, I knew that we were in for something special. Congrats to you and your family, can't wait to see your son on the field next season!

papa shaq congrats sir, your son is an amazing player and you have been a tremendous asset to this message board. Thanks for your information and help throughout the process, some of us actually felt like we were on these recruiting trips.

I see a lot of accolades for Shaq coming his way in the future. I've watched his hi-lights, his leadership abilities, his likability, and his football IQ. I've watched a ton of high profiled high school players for the past decades, and I'm not just saying this b/c he's your son or b/c he's a Cane now, but Shaq is special. He's deceivingly fast, as was hi-lighted in the U.S Army game. His eyes stays focus on his target instead of getting mixed up, which shows a lot of discipline.

I'm sooooooooooo happy he's going to have the opportunity to play for a real coaching staff and play in a system that will market his abilities. I can see him leaving an indelible imprint on our program. Kudos to you as a parent, and wishing must success to you, the family, and Shaq moving forward.

Go Canes.

Just curious Mr. Q...in what section will you be sitting? (Not asking for the row or seat #) just curious what section to know if we are near each other? And most importantly, what lot will you be tailgating in? :sneakiness:

Must be an amazing feeling. Congrats. Thank you for your contributions to this site. It's been so insightful. I can't wait to follow Shaqs career. I think he's going to be a great one.

Sure I'll run into you at some games. I'll be with a famous Cane that saved the game for our first NC. Congrats to you and your son, but more specially to Canes for getting a good person and player.

I showed with bottle red solo cups and ice.. got a few weeks for my first rehersal for the spring game..

If you don't mind, describe your feelings on pulling away from campus a bit more if you don't mind. I literally dread that day as a parent on one hand, but the other will be me being excited for him. It would be nice knowing he has all of the coaching staffs support as well as his teammates, rather than just some roommate he's never met. Stuff gets me all emotional thinking about that day to come, will I have prepared him enough, what could I have done better, etc.

Your posts + the Carter Hucks ones were special.

Thank you for inviting and letting us into the wild world of recruiting, pops. One thing -- is there a recruiting story you would like to share of an experience that turned you and Shaq off or a funny one, etc.. thx. Bless up!
