### Though Ufomba Kamalu has mentioned slight changes in how defensive linemen are lining up, Kirby said there are "not many changes" in how the team plays defense.

"Guys have to do their job," he said. "You can’t have a good defense if one guy decides to do their own thing. It’s hard in college to do [that]. You think about somebody else. You mess around and don’t do your job. "

For years, UM defensive coaches have tried to get players to stop freelancing. Apparently, the problem hasn't completely been eliminated.

Its a trick

God i hope

They've tried to keep it quiet because of some irrational fear of tipping off opponents. I guess watching the film of Bethune and FAU won't be enough of a tip off.

They've switched from a two-gap to a one-gap scheme. None of that fixes alignment issues and playing short-handed in the box though.

Perryman said the same thing last year at the Media Days and we see how the defense turned out during the season. Going to be a long season

changes have been made. a player told me they were told not to share it with public.

how long are we going to hear about guys "free lancing" as an excuse for horrible coaching/scheme?

Golden and Dorito have been teaching and running a 2 gap 3-4 defense since they started coaching.. why would they ever change it 20 years later? Even if they did what makes anyone think that it would be any better if they can't even be successful in their own scheme, let alone a new one that they have never used before.

Because "you think players then plays," Al Golden presser 2010

Defense was #14 last season. But the points allowed was way too high. If this team cracks out a top 15 total and scoring defense then I will say to watch out.

IF changes have been made i wanna know what, macho has said they threw out the 2 gapping which is good, but we need to have more pre snap movement and less reads and let the kids play

Because what he's doing isn't working and will cost him his job. Survival makes people do funny things.

Changes have been made but they are changes that don't reflect in the win loss column, necessarily.

This is exactly the problem though, isn't it?

I don't doubt that if every guy did their job that MAYBE this scheme would work...but that's the issue. When you have a team made up of a bunch of 18 & 19 year-olds someone is bound to not do their job. We can't rely on 11 teenagers all properly doing their job in a complex defensive scheme. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills!!!
