How does every other sports league pay their players? From tickets and tv/ad revenue.. CFB seems to keep the obvious money off the table then expect those same pool to pay again, I would think only a few rabid bases would do that and only off positive results..
 
Exactly as anyone with a brain predicted. It's actually happening even faster than I thought it would. NIL deals were a **** measuring contest for big money boosters but once the lack of ROI kicks in, they get buyer's remorse. The whole "it's going to get out of control and every player is going to demand a million dollars" folks were all panicky over nothing.

Things will settle out and the way it should have always been was once the kids produce and actually generate more buzz with their name being a top player/nfl draft prospect they could capitalize

of course things will settle.. but also drop on the lower scale to so the payout difference between factories and the GTs of the world will remain and further divide.

Of course. NIL isn't supposed to be some great equalizer. The schools with the most money will continue to spend the most and reap the benefits the most.

the donors that care about football and winning (the old SEC guard - Bama, UGA, LSU, etc.) will continue to spend no matter what bc their donors care about football and winning. the donors that want an ROI will eventually not realize it

Respectfully disagree, unless those old guards are getting an asset in return or a strong ROI from the player they are funding it’s going to level out.

Those guys are as passionate as it gets about their teams but you can only shovel out so much of your own money and not get anything in return…whether it’s power, money, or influence. Sure as **** aren’t getting a slice of the power or influence pie at Bama

thye were funding it before it was called NIL. all that changed was it is out in public. to them winning is their ROI

our boosters donate for influence and an ROI (whether its feeling important at UM or getting a deal out of it financially (Ruiz using NIL to promote Lifewallet, his boat company, and his firm). Ruiz does love UM tho so hes more of a unicorn of donors for us. ****, look at football and baseball. our boosters got Mario hired before an AD was even here, our boosters got JD promoted.

Yes but the amounts spent on most recruits will drop across the board. More competition drives up bids. If there's less guys offering NIL deals, there's going to be fewer huge contracts.

The NIL model doesn't make sense with $9mm+ coaches.

The coaching staff made crazy money because they were the ones accumulating the talent. Now that the talent is paid for, the coaching salaries need to be readjusted with that money going to NIL budgets.

The NFL has a cap but it is close to a free market. The best players make 5x the best coaches. In college it's completely backwards.

Your generalizations ignore a very simple concept.

The "funding it before it was called NIL" was at a numerical level that was much lower, less transparent, and unenforceable. And there was no Portal. So broken promises and smaller dollar amounts were tolerated, since there was no recourse.

Now that these arrangements are being reduced to writing, the fatigue is coming from having to satisfy millions of dollars in payments every single year. Without one single shiny building to show for all that check-writing.

If you can't see the fatigue setting in, you're willfully choosing to ignore it.

What is happening today is NOT the same as what was happening 10 years ago or 20 years ago. It may be related, in the same way that fourth cousins four times removed are related, but it's a very different type of expenditure today, much larger and much more enforceable and much more transparent.

EDIT: And for the record, we've already seen it. Hugh Hathnocock was FULLY AWARE of the $14M offer to Jaden Rashada, he had NO PROBLEMS dropping his "insider tweets" in advance of Rashada's flip, he knew exactly what was happening. It was only after the deal was signed and he had a couple of weeks of sanity and reflection that he decided to renege on his offer. And that will happen more and more.

The SEC Old Guard for several decades dropped bags. The size of the bags didn't have to be very large - but only a few select teams boosters could cobble up enough to swipe some good talent - as they preyed on kids as all other universities weren't IN the bag game.

Bag competition among half a dozen bag teams was acceptable and you'd win some, lose some, but the field of players was larger than these few teams could absorb/pay - so they excelled in recruiting.

Now, the cost has gone up - paying players is legal - and more competitors that can come up with some cash means the small bags of the past are no longer that attractive.

Everyone got excited, started throwing outrageous amounts for this player, or that player - and it's unsustainable, as no one can pay every player outrageous NIL deals. Some oil man one year wants to show off among boosters - he can impress everyone - once. Maybe twice - but that's also unsustainable.

Starting these collectives to pool money - that has many flaws. It's like paying taxes - you send the money, but you don't necessarily get the guy you wanted to come to your university - as you're not in charge of where and on whom your money is spent.

Once a good program or a few breakout - UM, USC, etc., the club gets larger, but will eventually settle down to an annual top ten teams that players will prefer to go to - and not just the top 5.

And the dollars will be more equal among the elite.

That's all I'm saying. I'm not mad at you or anyone, I'm just pointing out that when dudes give money directly to the school, they get stuff named after them.

Where is the "I offered $14M to Jaden Rashada" wing of the Florida Athletic Department?
