First, let’s just state the obvious - this year’s duo at DE are the very definition of generational and in an overall sense, we can’t help but take some kind of step back. Having said that….
If we get Wilson, like it appears to be trending towards, I could actually see us put up as many or more sacks this year. Here’s why…
Our starting DT’s, barring injury, will be the best tandem in the entire country. They will create havoc on nearly every down and I expect both Moten and Scott, to collectively take another step forward.
I think Heatherman will have fully installed and coached up his D by the first game next season. Because of this and the LB room taking another step forward, our DE’s won’t be expected or relied on to do as much as Bain/Mesidor, which kept their sack totals lower than they could have been.
With NO disrespect to the greatest DE tandom of the last 20+years, next years group is a little bit quicker. If the DT’s are getting even better penetration, and the back 7 is even more solid (and I really believe Heatherman will have them that way) I can see our DE’s racking up as good or better sack and TFL numbers.
Next year’s D will be comparable to this year’s in an overall sense and with a Mensah improved O, and a lighter regular season than last year, I really like our playoff prospects!
