The NCAA has also introduced a new status for the class of 2016 - the "Academic Redshirt." An “Academic Redshirt” may receive a scholarship and practice with their team, but may not participate in game competition as a college freshman. Students with a GPA of 2.30 or above may achieve either “Academic Redshirt” or “Full Qualifier” status, depending on their SAT/ACT test scores. Students with a core course GPA between 2.00 and 2.29 cannot attain “Full Qualifier” status but may achieve “Academic Redshirt” status by meeting minimum sliding scale test score requirements.

One article I read stated that 42% of the athletes that signed on NSD 2015 would not be qualified under these new rules?

Question 1: Will this have a large impact on NSD 2016?

Question 2: Do you recruit a kid that you know is a Academic Redshirt?

Question 3: Why don't these students pay attention to their school work and not end up an academic casualty? They have no one else to blame!

Honestly they dont. Its a cumulative gpa and most classes freshman year in public high school are pretty easy. Including they offer about 12 gym classes so its not asking to much to finish with a 2.3. Most students need atleast a 2.8 and beast test score to get accepted.

I agree with you both... but remember we are talking about 14 or 15 year old kids... some existing with limited support at home... and I say 14 and 15 year olds.. because most of this need to be done by their SR year.. Shaq is ready now he is basically going to school to play football.. Zach is doing the same thing...they both put in work early...but it was their spport channel that made sure it was done...

Exactly. Most of the kids I knew growing up in Palm Beach were the same. No support at home and some were basically raising themselves. Football was the only thing they had that was constant in their lives.

Can I ask how this differs from a Greyshirt?

Redshirt, they are still on scholly! Grey shirt a kid has to pay his own way(or grants/financial aid).

Also, grey shirt cant participate with team in fall semester! Red shirt does!

Whatever makes it harder for kids to get into FSU, UF, Alabama and OSU, I'm in favor of!!!!

Way I see it, most of these kids need to redshirt anyway. You get 25 spots a class, and we know most of the kids in the 15-25 spots are never going to be more than a role player, so why not save a spot or two on a high academic risk, high reward guy?

All I will say about the whole "these kids struggle at home so there grades struggle too" is this argument. At our school we at times did more work than the kid to make them qualify for college. in the end it looks better on everyone when they make it in. Something's just are not important to the kid, including football. We have put some kids in college that have no business being in a college class rooms and have awful home life's, but playing football was important to them so they will do what needs to be done to get in. Some kids are happy being local all stars. That isn't the case with everyone but I would 90% of the ones I have seen, it is. A school will do everything in it's power to get these kids in.

Multiple Gym and auxiliary classes are not counted in the Core GPA (Cumulative, yes. Core, they're not), so it's not like a kid can load up on them and qualify. But I do agree that the kids need to get on top of the grades from the freshmen year. Unfortunately, a lot of these kids have no direction or leadership from the adults in their lives.

This is going to expose alot of SFL schools and coaches. Especially the ones we know are on the take.

It just makes it even harder for Miami to get kids in with all the other different hidden agendas this Administration put in place to destroy this once football power!!!
