Is it an accurate comparison to say that Notre Lame between Lou Holtz and Brian Kelly was basically stuck in the similar mediocrity that UM has been in since Butch and his recruits left?

It just takes one right HC hire…

Even with ND making multiple bad hires in between Holtz and Kelly, they had 3 BCS Bowl appearances in that time span. They got spanked in all of them, but they were able to ride name recognition and a mediocre schedule that they get to create to good records. Never mind the fact that thanks to ND's immense financial resources(More than Miami, significantly less than Alabama/Clemson), they have been able to give Kelly the resources that they need.

Even with those resources, and making the best possible hire for them in Kelly, they haven't truly been a contender. If ND was in a conference, they would consistently be a 9-3/10-2 team. That said, I'd kill for Miami to be that on a consistent basis, and it's not like Kelly is some crazy elite coach. He's a competent coach that gets the most out of the talent on his roster.

Watching this game makes me feel one thing. Lashlee did not call a game like we were trying to win. Each team taking deep shots on 3rd and 2. But we iso zone on 3rd and 7

This has nothing to do with Manny. Nick Saban hasn't loss more than 2 games since his first season at Bama. I'm confident in my assessment that Bama is the best team in the country after week 1.
