ND preview (long analysis)

Why would quarters be a good vertical pass opportunity?

I already said why, mostly. In quarters the safeties are more reactive to the run because the deep responsibility isn't as strict as 2-deep coverage. With play action you can catch them flat footed but even if they get appropriate depth they have to communicate the post otherwise it becomes man coverage with the corner or safety trailing and no help to squeeze the route over the top. This happened to ND in the UGA game and it happens to college defenses all the time including Miami. Post-dig is especially powerful against quarters. The only concern is pass protection but ND has an average pass rush at best.

.
I'll take it a step further. The vertical routes that work against Cover 4 are right in line with the best things we do. Double posts on the outside by Richards and Thomas today, please. All we need is to keep their extra blitzer in front of us. Fade/out with Richards/Berrios, too. Might find action there, though I suspect ND to bait Rosier into the out, too. Rosier needs to hold a half tick longer tonight. He'll be baited by zones.

Very good read, although, I couldn't understand anything from the second paragraph....

I was describing the scheme and plays that ND likes to run, specifically from a running perspective. They play a shotgun spread and they like to read the edge defender with Wimbush/Adams carrying out the handoff at the mesh point. The backfield action is very consistent but the blocking schemes are variable as they run zone, man, and power (2 pulling linemen or G-lead where only the playside guard pulls). Sometimes they sprinkle in jet motion with a slot running across the formation at the snap. Beyond that they don't do much to confuse or constrain the defense. They simply trust their OL to execute (rightfully so) and Wimbush to make the right reads in the run game (he usually does), and that keeps the chains moving.

Jeff Christensen the QB guru talks about getting his QBs to refine their footwork and release mechanics so they can hold the ball 0.5s longer and still get the ball delivered quicker to the spot. This is the best attribute of Kirk Cousins and Garoppolo imo. I've seen Rosier do it at times but he has issues with batted balls because of his size and low-ish release.

Richt is right that the OL can't impose its will yet, but that doesn't mean that the O can't be effective. Don't have to blow ND off the line.
1) Dallas has great hands, use the back as a receiver. No need to run into brick walls. A 4 yard pass is as good as a four yard run.
2) I've been saying it for the last three games - use Dallas in the Wildcat 5-6 times, bring in 2 extra blockers, and get numbers on the line. Dallas can be especially helpful on the goal line.

I agree. Miami can have sporadic success running the ball in this game with plays that create a numbers advantage. ND will be looking to stack the line rather than disrupt runs in the backfield. A wildcat package with jet motion could be effective but I would only utilize that if it was practiced for more than a week. Bringing in a 6th OL (Gaynor?) and running the Stanford unbalanced line formation from under center would also work but that would be a paradigm shift for Richt.

ND played 3 of their 4 big games at home. You are discounting the impact of important non-statistical factors. Miami playing at home, crowd noise, energy, and emotions Miami team will play with. Don't under estimate how Miami plays being the underdog, being disrespected by almost everybody including local sports talking heads like that self promoting Dan Le Batard.

This. Our Domer friend isn't strictly wrong as he's using descriptive information based on what has transpired in the past. If you want to project future performance you have to analyze context. The context I see is that ND has beaten up on bad teams and/or weak-willed teams that played soft on the road. Miami has shown itself to be a physically and mentally tough team, especially at home. Miami's only flat performance was playing down to UNC on the road. That game has no relevance to tonight although fans of the transitive property and descriptive stats might assume that ND is going to win because they dominated the same UNC team.

Highseas, thank you for these posts. Are you a coach?

Highseas, thank you for these posts. Are you a coach?

No but I (try to) study the game like one and soak up all the information I can from those who know more.

Thanks for the positive responses everyone. I only wish I trusted my analysis more because it was 100% spot-on and pointed to a score closer to what transpired (41-8) than my prediction (30-13). Let's review:

 • Wimbush was a turnover-prone fraud, as expected. This is why you watch the games instead of reading stats. On paper he rarely turned the ball over but that was lucky circumstance and he even had a couple picks dropped last night
 • Adams is a JAG who can't create yards for himself. This was obvious on film but hey the stats say he's the most dynamic back in the nation. LOL!
 • ND WR/TE group is pretty good but it doesn't matter.
 • OL executes but doesn't move bodies and finish blocks that well. Key was to stack the line and Miami did
 • Vanilla scheme, slow-developing read option plays. This is what killed ND (besides lack of talent at QB/RB).

I guess the one thing I didn't expect was those early blitzes and variable fronts from ND. They actually had a good defensive gameplan and decent execution but it didn't matter because Richt was always a step ahead of them and Miami is too talented.

Can't wait to do this again for Clemson!

That and Rosier made the right read and smart decisions time and time again.

Rosier did a good job last night against the zone. There were actually more points available. We shut it down and still won 41-8.

I'm probably one of the biggest defenders of our defense on this board and yet they considerably outperformed even my expectations. Nothing overrun. Minimal missed tackles. Everything clean. ND's QBs (ha) couldn't take advantage of any of the limited soft spots in our defense. At all. Nothing. I'm on a high.

Yeah his demeanor was like night and day compared to the FSU game. He had that Tom Brady cool confidence going. He was mostly hitting the primary/initial read but still he made quick decisions and only panicked once vs. pressure.

This preview of the game was about on target as one could be.Your writeup should
get you consideration to be scout for many college teams.

what ever happened to NonCents ?

He disappeared like Jim Hoffa..

Thanks man I appreciate that. I like to think I'm better at evaluating individual players than advance scouting teams but this instance was a success. If I had any idea how to get my foot in the door as a scout I'd already be doing that instead of wasting my time with tedious schoolwork.

He was band for a while but it looks like that time has passed. I'd love to hear what he thinks about this:

ND trolling morons respond in 3.2.1.

definitely not here to troll. but MAN. talk about way off on 80% of what was said......

Seas your thoughts on Miami the rest of the way and which match-ups you like for them?
