NCAA Rules-Head Coaching Changes

There are a zillion articles on Google from 2018 about proposals to rule changes if a Head Coach leaves, a player can transfer and not sit out. However, each article was about a proposal for this that was brought forth last year to be voted on. I cannot find any articles on the conclusion to the proposal.

I am assuming since Martell has to hire a lawyer-it did not go through.

Thoughts?

To OP's topic, it would not surprise me to see Tate Martell win a challenge here. This is an emerging process that is being defined/redefined as we go.

The broader topic is that the NCAA is taking steps to create a free agency market for college football. Right now, UM is a big brand with a small time football team. We will continue to be the beneficiaries of this new system. That will change one year after our next ten win season. We will start bleeding under-utilized talent to other big brand programs who are having down years, coaching changes, etc...

As much as I would love to have Martell in 2019 this will set a pretty bad precedent moving forward. There’s been 22 HC changes this off season and with something as simple as a coaching change **** will get further out of hand.

If Miami Martell gets it, lucky us. But this will get out of hand.

I took a beating on this board last season when I said that the NCAA is creating a free agency market for CFB but now folks are starting to see it. Times have changed. IMO the Ed O'Bannon law suit was the first step in creating this process. Even though these kids are amateur athletes they still get to have control of their own "brand." The NCAA was able to strong arm kids for nearly a century but that era has ended.

When you say it will "get out of hand," Im not sure what you mean. If you mean it will destroy some of the customs and norms of college football, I agree. If you think it will lead to kids playing for 3 schools in 5 years I don't agree. It will also put more pressure on Athletic Directors to do more due diligence when hiring new coaches.

Gonna be fun, exciting and agonizing to watch it play out. lol

If Martell graduates then he can play next season without a doubt. Here’s the preface, if they grant Fields permission to play next season they have to grant it to Martell. Martell actually had a head coach retire. Fields only objection is that of a racist outburst from a UGA fan that was well documented. They have to prove it’s a safety and well being problem. That’s a hard pill to swallow considering his sister just enrolled at UGA. They will have to claim she isn’t in the spotlight.
In most years I’d be hard pressed to say the NCAA gives Miami any type of break. However, the OSU staff and Fields seem confident he will be eligible next season. Based on that alone, I say Martell will be eligible.
It’s a huge advantage for Martell if he can get on campus and participate somehow this spring. Maybe he risks not being eligible this season just to get here early. The safe bet would be to graduate from OSU and then enroll during the summer. He’s going to have to put in 5x’s the work compared to the other guys missing the spring. If I’m him, I bust my butt now and then take the easiest schedule possible at UM this fall to focus on football.

Best thing for Miami would be to allow transfers with no restrictions and no sitting out a year.

Would totally kill the bag game. Why would Bama boosters drop hundreds of thousands of dollars on a high school kid, when that kid might walk away after just one year?

Plus, Miami is the best destination for kids with NFL dreams. Pretty much every pro talent agency is run out of Miami, NY, or LA. This is an NFL town. You do big things here, you’re gonna get noticed by pro scouts more than anywhere else.

They'll drop bags on recruits and transfers.

I’m sure it will happen, but it will be harder to pull off. Plus, a kid with 1 or 2 years of eligibility left is thinking more about the millions he will make in the NFL than the 200k he might get from a booster in Tuscaloosa.

I'm sure there's some really broad language in the rules somewhere to find a loophole with all the shenanigans at OSU last season.

Cam Newton's dad disagrees...

If Im not mistaken Cam Newton committed to the gators then went to a juco in (I wanna say) Mississippi then went Auburn for one year.

Working from memory here.

I think you're right. To me, JUCO = high school, as far as bags and the way you recruit go. Totally different game when you're recruiting kids already in college.

The SEC was built from the ground up over generations.... by using churches and other things to funnel money to poor families to get high school kids to play in their hick *** states. It's a different ballgame when you're recruiting kids to transfer from one university to another.

Different level of maturity, different experiences, different things they're looking for, etc.

I could be wrong, but I believe the SEC is the big loser with the new transfer portal. I don't think their bag game will be nearly as effective with these kids.
