This rule is affecting the "smaller" sports big time. I spoke with three separate college lacrosse coaches last weekend, and they all said they have been calling kids in their 27 classes to drop them from the class. With this new rule, they simply don't have room for those kids anymore. It's caused complete panic with these families. Every school is doing the same math, so it's not like there are open seats for these kids
Moving forward, they all said their high school classes are going to be half the size now. The NCAA created the 5 and 5 rule only to get out of the red-shirt waiver business. They were downing in appeals, so they handed everyone a 5th year and called it a solution. They traded a paperwork problem for this
