My take on Canes football

I see a bunch of staff bashing and people fusing it with how well UGA is doing. First thing first, Kirby didn't do anything Mark Richt didn't do at UGA. If there was a playoff earlier Richt would have had teams in there to play for it all. Next if this was still the BCS it probably would have been OU v Clemson for the title, which means Smart wpuld have had same season Richt had a few times where they missed out. My point is get off this Mark Richt can't coach and had a ceiling at UGA, i think its tired and bull.

As for our team, we are all mad about losing 3 in a row to end the season. But when you get to the business end and playing with the big guys, your flaws are exposed. I don't have any excuses for anyone but i know we have serious deficiencies in key positions. OL and QB mainly.

I also know Richt may seem like a soft spoken person but he didn't come here tp repeat what he did at UGA and these transfers are telling to me that they are letting the players know this $h!t ain't good enough. See he almost body slammed the **** ref. I expect more underachievers to hit the road and clear the way for more savages. Football is what have you done for me lately and we have lost 3 in a row but we will be better. I believe in these guys.

We need a Fullback and a power TE so we can just line up and smash these teams like UVA and Syracuse that hung with us this year. There’s only a few teams on the schedule that we couldn’t rely totally on this.

It's been said before, but I think a next significant step this team needs to make is just that....when we stop letting run of the mill mediocre ACC teams like UVA, Syracuse, GT, UNC and Pitt consistently hang in games with us and sometimes win, that's when you'll know we've turned that "physical" corner, especially up front. I for one am sick of all the whining about "playcalling," when it's so clear that the core issue here is that we can't push anyone around....especially on offense, but to some extent on defense too. The "playcalling" argument these people constantly make implies that they truly believe that this team would be undefeated and in the playoff, if only we'd run more pre-snap motion and jet sweeps. I mean, come on, get real. Of course plays that don't work can be criticized. As fans, this is very easy to do....but that is not the reason why we aren't in the playoff.

Richt himself said it all season long, even before any of the losses, that the team was not in a position to be able to impose its will on anyone. I'm pretty confident that he knows what a team like that looks like, and that he is trying his best to build one of them here.

:thumbsup_kid: Viola!

I have no doubt these guys will get it done. Meyer is a great coach and they got trounced by Iowa. Even UGA got trounced by Auburn. This roster will be aligned next year interms of how each position is fleshed out. Its not about blaming players, its about looking at which positions we have deficiencies and it falls mainly on the offense, OL and TE are one unit imo and the key one is QB. Diaz will have to improve next year but i have seen enough in 2 years to know this guy knows what he's doing.

Would you rather have golden(foldem),Shannon or coker back.what the last three games have shown how far our team has to go before it can challenge the big boys.it also shows we don't cupboard full of talented players going to take time and a couple recruiting classes before we have the ability to where the second and third teamers are decent backups to the starters.chopped

I appreciate the positivity and I still support Richt. Having said that, there are problems I have with Richt and staff. First of all, one would suppose that Richt came here to win and I mean win national titles. Richt is not stupid so I have a hard time understanding how he thinks that his command of offensive football is good enough for us to compete at an elite level. What exactly does Thomas Brown do? What is it exactly that he adds to our offense? Same for Jon Richt? What exactly is their offensive philosophy and how exactly do they make us better. I see so many young and talented offensive minds out there for the taking. Kendall Briles is at FAU. Why not offer him a raise? Matt Canada has parted ways with LSU if I am correct. Why not pursue him? I realize that Rosier was a major liability in terms of running a high powered offense but last year our offense was just as bland and boring with a veteran ALL ACC QB in Kaaya. I don't want to sound like a broken record but this offense is seriously behind the times in terms of creativity. Let's say Perry wins the job next year. We all know that from a talent perspective he is head and shoulders above Rosier but my question is will Richt's playcalling limit the potential of the offense? With this 2018 class our offense will be loaded with skill talent. Will Richt be able to maximize all that talent or will we continue to underachieve on offense with countless 3 and outs?

The bottom line here is that Richt needs to upgrade the offensive coaching staff and that fact is glaringly obvious. Richt came here to win and we assume that he has learned from his lessons at UGA. I don't want to,seem alarmist but so far Richt is following the same pattern in terms of playcalling responsibilities and the need for an elite offensive coordinator. He seems to think he is capable of doing it himself but after 2 years frankly I've seen enough. He needs to swallow his pride and realize he is hurting the offense more than helping it. We need Richt to hire an elite OC so he can concentrate on being a head coach in addition to being the QB coach if he so chooses.

On defense I like Diaz but I believe the defense should have been better than it was. I realize and fully appreciate that this defense has an excellent average in yards per play allowed. Still, the inability to get off the field on 3rd down is disturbing. Diaz's insistence on playing his soft zone is maddening beyond belief since zone is not something we do well. I realize that we were shorthanded in the secondary and there was a significant lack of speed and athleticism there but Diaz needs to analyze his playcalling and use of personnel because he must do better. The LB unit has not developed to expectation and that must be addressed. Also the DL recruiting has been puzzling to say the least. The staff knew full well that DJ was leaving and that RJ and Norton were probably leaving yet knowing all that we have 1 DT committed at this point. That's just not good enough. If we add Tyson Campbell to this DB haul of 2018 and even if we don't, Diaz will have absolutely zero excuse for making mediocre QBs look like no1 draft picks and no excuse for constantly giving up 3rd and long. Like The Franchise said earlier there is no need to have 2 DB coaches especially if one of them can't recruit. Rumph must deliver the AH4 or at least the AH3. Campbell is a dire need and I don't care how good are DB class is without him.

We are entering year 3 of the Richt regime and this year special teams was a complete abortion. No excuse for Miami to field such atrocious special teams. No excuse whatsoever. Do better or find another special teams coach. This off-season Richt needs to rule with an iron fist and demand constant improvement and a higher level of play period end of efffn story.

Wow CMR has been here for 2 yrs and has had 2 different QBs which may never get a snap during the reg season. Who were the Patriots before Brady, or Jimmy J. before Aikman. My point is It's a QB driven league in which you have to go through your reads and buy time for a wishy washy OL. Giving the Defense the lionshare of minutes wore the Def down at the tail end of the season to where Diaz has to find ways to keep his guys fresh we all know the depth chart wasn't there. We are what our record says we are, but if SOME FANS CAN'T SEE US GETTING BETTER THAN THE GOLDEN/SHANNON ERA THEN WE IDK WHAT TO SAY. 2 big bowls in only 2 yrs with our personnel. Richt will not give the keys over again to be ushered out. In 2 yrs if improvements aren't made by by Richt. Jimmy J sucked in Dallas until he got his guys. R E L A X if you can't do that be a bagman and stop chasing kids who don't want to play for fair weather fans.

I think many of us living in the real world said at the start of the season we would be happy with 10 wins, winning the Coastal and making it to the Orange Bowl.

We accomplished those goals and I think the team is trending in the right direction.
What hurts the most though of course is coming so close to the elite bowls mountain top and then just falling off the cliff with a major collapse at the end of the season (three games in a row).

Good thing is we survived the fall and there is always next year. We have a lot of good players coming back who will take this experience and learn from it. We also will have more play makers and young hungry kids coming in who want to make this team elite again.
But we all must be patient.

This post is flawed in so many ways, but it reflects a lot of the message board echo chamber group think and talking points.

First message board talking point: Mark Richt's play calling isn't creative because of no motion and no shifting. We need an OC like Matt Canada or Kendall Briles.

This is complete horse****, message board drivel. 1. Our offense is bad because we can't run the ball consistently, not because of jet sweeps. If your oline can't block for toss sweeps, it can't block for jet sweeps. The oline blocking on the play is very similar. It's just a different ball carrier. We simply don't generate enough push on first down to be an efficient offense. 2. Matt Canada sucks. Not sure why people are so in love with him. Please list his accomplishments. He had an all ACC/All American back in Pittsburgh. That helps any offense. 3. Get this Kendall Briles **** all the way out my face. He is not the reason Baylor had good offenses. Art Briles is the architect of that offense. Kendall ain't the reason FAU's offense took off. That's Kiffin's offense. This is all message board echo chamber nonsense. I hate richts play calling at times, but he hasn't been bad. We just aren't great at QB and oline and had too many injuries to the skill guys. Any offense that struggles there is going to struggle

Second message board talking point:. Manny Diaz plays too much soft zone!!!

Look, did Manny play soft man and zone from time to time? Yes. Every team in America does!!! What y'all are reacting to is the times you saw us give up first downs playing off coverage. This happened but we also got beat playing press coverage. We also got beat a ton because he blitzed third and long to force hot throws too often (again, not soft zone). What I saw was personnel problems and untimely blitzing. At the beginning of the season we had one proven corner (young) and one proven safety (JJ). Every other spot in the secondary was unknown. Early in the season we played Robert Knowles as a back up safety because the FRESHMEN weren't ready. We started a grad transfer from the mighty citadel!!! Our secondary issues were masked most of the season. Teams picked on Delaney and our safeties when they walked down to cover in the slot. It happened all season and Wisconsin finally was able to exploit how weak we were in the secondary. Lbs couldn't get under the slants in zone and redwine couldn't cover quick throws. If you walked him up we were susceptible to the quick deep ball (again, see Wisconsin and Clemson). It is convenient and lazy to say "Manny plays too much soft zone". It is simply not true. We play press man a ton, but the other teams have coaches and found our weakness at saftey and corner. Delaney and Red were not good enough for us to play press against spread formations. He sent poorly timed blitzes on occasion, but that comes with his philosophy. Y'all thought we were a top 10 defense coming into the season and expected us to lock people up. That's not who we were in the backend and team figured that out.

Final narrative for today: WE NEED A SPECIAL TEAMS COACH BECAUSE OUR SPECIAL TEAMS SUCK!!!

By what metric are we measuring our special teams performance? Badgley missing fgs? The other kickers not missing field goals? Or Feagles being erratic? We covered kicks well all season. We didn't have a single muffed punt. We gave up one blocked punt but also blocked a punt or two. Feagles was a freshmen. Freshman are erratic. We didn't house any kicks, although brax came close against FSU. JT did a decent job returning kicks, but our return team just didn't have the horses. TEs play kick return unit. We have none. LBS play kick return unit. We barely got any of those and the ones we have are freshmen. Rbs cover kicks. We literally had no depth at RB and still had to use Homer on special teams. We were amazingly thin. Our special teams play was not the result of poor schemes or techniques and it wasn't awful. Bad special teams play is not covering kicks, having kicks blocked, dropping punts having fakes run on you etc. Kickers missing kicks and not housing punt and kick returns on a regular basis is not how you evaluate special teams play.

This is YEAR two after Al Golden **** recruiting for 5 years. This is what a talented team lacking depth looks like.
