Every coach usually has their niche. Urban is offensive minded with his scheme entrenched at every school he has coached, Saban is a defensive guru who breeds an aggressive style of play, malzahn offensive wiz, Charlie strong defensive, and the list can go on and on.
My point is when a coach has a clear identity, the performance measuring process is that much easier. With Al Golden what is his niche? I mean he was a TE, who coached defense, and now is our special teams coach. For us however, he doesn't run our D, and only really is responsible (for whole team in reality) for the special teams.
You see where I am getting. It is difficult to have a coach with no true identity. Personally , and I think looking at the list of best coaches will also suggest that coaches with no true identity are not as successful. Just start naming top 25 coaches and then name what they are best at, now ask someone the same question about Golden, they won't have an answer.
Conclusion: golden has no true identity. If his identity is defense and special teams, we have been very bad on defense, and good to ok during his tenure. The lack of true identity makes it difficult to measure his true success. Either way that's not a good thing
