My rant...

Maybe it's finally time people realized (Duke's) a very good back, but not nearly as good as people here think he is.

This.

I've been saying this for a while. I love Duke, but he isn't an elite college football RB. Very very good, but not elite.

As a sophomore he was on pace for 1400 yards in 12 games. Thats pretty elite. Could only imagine the numbers he would put up at in an Oregon or Baylor offense.

Does anyone honestly think D'Onofrio is running the defense independent of Golden? Changing DCs doesn't change the scheme.

BTW I don't have a problem with the scheme. Guys aren't executing. You mentioned the AJ Highsmith play. He made at least 3 or 4 negative plays today. AQM had Winston in the backfield twice on 3rd downs, but he didn't bring him to the ground. You have to make plays when the opportunities are there.

As for the spot-dropping, I don't know. I think it's more likely our LBs suck at pattern recognition. Cornileus has ZERO awareness, and yet he seems to be a trusted Nickel LB.

For me it's most certainly a talent issue.

Which is why I don't agree with the people saying that we have the potential to be great next year.

I bet 20-30 college RBs could get to 1400 yds if they got the carries Duke was getting. He's great, but he's not as great as some people make him out to be.

I kinda hope he drops that extra weight next year and we get a big back for him to split carries with. That's when he's most effective.

I was watching them as they were walking through the tunnel about to come out for the kick-off, and I was stunned. I've never seen such an emotionless UM team. Later on when Morris and Green went out for the coin toss, Morris looked like he was scared. The ****-Noles were pumped up and ready to go. I told my dad that I did not like their body language. The Canes teams of old would have come out there ready to bust some *** and kick somebody's teeth in. I love Golden and have been a huge supporter of his, but this isn't UM football. UM football is agressive, letting the defense penetrate and wreak havoc. UM football is letting our DB's play man-to-man and kick the opponents *** and then talk **** afterwards. UM football is ****y, sure of itself and bad to the motha ****in bone, not this conservative, bend-but-don't-break BS. You got stallions, let them be stallions. I agree we still have to get better at certain positions talent wise. But if you don't let the dogs out, they can't hunt. Until Golden realizes this and we get our killer instinct back, ala the JJ, Erickson and Butch days, we will never be fully back. Improved...yes...but not elite. I still stand with my boys at the U, just keeping it real.

This is just dumb, and proves you're looking for reasons to bash the coaches. Bash them for the scheme, but the team was plenty pumped up. There was plenty of emotion. They were talking trash the entire night. They were celebrating big plays, they were jumping around from the second they took the field until the game was out of reach. I saw more emotion from Miami than from FSU pregame. I don't know what you were watching (actually I do, you saw what you wanted to see, what fits your agenda).

We must've been watching different things. I saw a flat Miami team.

It's a talent issue. We'll at better, faster, and more aggressive, when we have the right people. The improvement in the D from last year has been impressive and that's largely due to the personnel improving. We don't have the talent nor depth to win this sort of game yet. I think it's going to take 2-3 years.

They were far from flat. There is a difference between being flat and being not as good on the field.

I.

Not many teams could hold Florida State to a 7 point deficit on the road at halftime. I put a lot of stock in halftime scores. It's a subtle sign of an improving team. And we hardly looked scared.

.

The last 4 weeks this team has looked no different than a Randy Shannon team. We struggled versus 3 crappy teams and then got ***** smacked by the one good team we have played.

I think you're reaching here. You have no idea how up they were for the game pregame.

D and Golden are inseparable so that's that. One's not leaving without the other unless Golden heads to the league or something. So you are left with hope. We must remember that the defense was HISTORICALLY bad last year and still lacks talent--most of us thought it'd be ranked in the 60s or so. At least I did. It has bested that and realistically that first half was as bad as FSU has looked on offense all year. Those are positives. But, the overall philosophy of the defense is still to keep everything in front and to play to 3rd down and the red zone especially against good teams.

The question is whether there is a next phase to this. We have played more man this year and we are better at mixing coverages. Those are noticeable differences. As the talent continues to upgrade, will we be a more aggressive unit that more regularly attacks an offense? We don't know for certain. That's what we have to hope for. I can't exclude it because it's hard to flip defensive styles between games. We're set up to be a controlling, bend-but-don't-break unit this year but that does not mean that we have to continue to play that way when we have guys better than the Greens and Gaines and Highsmiths and Rodgers of the world.

I'm basing it strictly off the tunnel shots and intro. In my opinion they looked flat compared to FSU.

I could be wrong, they could've had a silent intensity. But that was my observation.

Can't disagree except Duke is an elite player. Best player to wear the uni since ST.

The problem is he's being overused bc there is no one else and bc our OC is afraid to use other backs in big games. It's killing me that he's hurt today. He's one of the real Canes.

I agree with the your statement about making plays but my point remains...we often have nobody near the ball. Our LB's sit there and stare at the QB while they're playing zone, they don't find WR's.

And is that the scheme or lbers not doing their job?

I support the OP's post 100% but I would add that Kehoe needs to go as well. Once again our vaunted o-line got pushed around.

Oline outplayed FSU's for much of the night but they had no respect for our passing game as the night wore on and more defenders started getting closer to the line of scrimmage. Oline was fine.

I think Duke is elite. But he is still fairly slight. He needs a Mike James to split carries. For whatever reason, as long as Duke has a pulse, Coley seems intent on running him 25+ in a game and Crawford 5 to 10. We need more balance there.

And when they came out they played FSU toe to toe for the first half and showed plenty of emotion, so does it really matter if they looked fired up in the tunnel?

I think he's basically Clinton Portis, without two other NFL RBs taking carries away from him.

Lulz at some of what is being said in here.

Our oline played great yesterday.

Lulz at Duke isn't elite. He's playing with half a ****** at QB. Teams stack the line daring us to throw, something we can't do.

I'm on board with this defensive scheme being a joke. Softest **** I've seen and thats a mix between talent and philosophy/scheme.
