My Manny Diaz thoughts.

Absolutely...100%...meaningless.

I could line up, blitz the house and play Cover-0 behind it. I'd lead the nation in TFL's. I'd also likely lead the nation in big plays allowed and PPG.

Hanging our hats on a TFL stat is similar to the same things Golden/D'Onofrio used to do when they would search their whole stat book for something that they were decent at and wear it out.

"We are #3 in the nation in 3rd down conversations when it's under 84 degrees at home."

What's concerning with Diaz is that while he's top 20 in TFL, he's not top 20 for 3rd downs or points allowed.

He was like 35th at those too, that's not reason enough for concern, plus I think he was top 20 in least big plays allowed and top 10 in Redzone. I wasn't hype on the hire but idk Ima see how it plays out, he doesn't seem bad at all. Texas is just haunting him.

Exactly! I don't get this whole mindset that as long as we're getting sacks and TFLs that we will be good. Tell me, what the **** do sacks and tfls on 1st and 2nd down mean if your D is consistently giving up first downs on 2nd and 3rd and long? I love sacks and TFLs but they need to be in the context of 3 and outs, turnovers and generally not allowing long TD drives.

Overall, his defenses have been fairly good, with the last year at Texas as an aberration. I still think his style will end up as a good recruiting tool for getting kids to Miami.

Looking back at last year's stats he was mid 30's in scoring defense, but right at the top 25 in scoring per play. Partly because his defense had some longer drives against them, but also because the offense was not as great as you'd think and left the defense out on the field too many times. If our offense can help our defense out I think he can definitely get us into the top 20 scoring defenses on a regular basis.

#19 in the nation in 3rd Down Percentage.
#11 in the nation in Red Zone %.

We didn't blitz a ton. We played a 1-gap 4-3. Mainly Quarters coverage with some man coverage mixed in. (usually during 3rd & medium situations)

And this was with an arguably less talented roster than we have now. Our Defensive Line consists of a young Olivier Vernon and Marcus Forston, Bailey, Ojomo, Porter, Regis, Andrew Smith and an extremely undersized Marcus Robinson. Two NFL starters but the rest were relatively average players. I'd like to think that we have at least two future NFL starters in this current DL unit. If I remember correctly this was the one year we had Petri coaching our D-Line.

Our DB unit wasn't full of studs either. The CB's were Brandon Harris, Ryan Hill, DVD and a young Brandon McGee. Ray-Ray Armstrong and Vaughn Telemaque were our Safeties and they were both Sophomores. The only consistent NFL player in that whole unit is Ray-Ray and he had to switch to LB.

Those were some good college players but I'd like to think that with Richt's recruiting we can assemble a much better defensive unit than that. (on a regular basis)

I guess the point I'm trying to make is, we don't need any extravagant blitzes, especially not that "Fire Zone" stuff. We just need to line-up and play. Be aggressive but be sound. Make offenses execute. Don't GIVE them ****. Once you start blitzing for the sake of blitzing, you begin giving gifts. Sure you'll make a few plays but then you'll leave a guy wide open in the flats or in the middle of the field and now you'r giving up 30+ yards net gain on a measly 8 yard completion.

One stat I liked that I saw on his defense last year was that the opposition's scoring per quarter lowered as the game went on to only 3 points in the 4th. There could be plenty of factors that play into that, but it's a good sign that Diaz has gotten better at adjustments.

Better than what I thought.

i was concerned about the manny diaz hire but i did feel maybe his problem at times was running a system tailor made for south florida kids with kids who didnt grow up playing that style. no one can hate on a guy who is starting 5 true fresh including 3 LB's and not only doesnt complain but has them looking good.
