I believe you have put this in perspective. I remember In the NY Giants first super bowl, The Giant defense battered Joe Montana so badly they made him look like a Jag. Jim Burt almost put him put of the game. This was a 2 time Super bowl winner (at the time) and league MVP.I hope he becomes a great one but how can anyone refer to :
"Obviously he has to work on the small things, pocket awareness, when to throw it away and when to keep it"
As "small things" ?
For his first game, his main thing was to maintain his poise, take care of the ball, and keep battling. A team tended to take the personality of it's QB. It'll get easier for him over the next several and he'll have a real chance to work on those little things like pocket awareness. He'll be better prepared for the next time he faces a top team in the ACC championship game.
