and on top of all that, he got to steal prime UF recruits. WTF kind of contract did he negotiate with UF. Afterall Butch couldn't coach after UNC, Radio couldn't take the University of Miami Coordinator job that was offered to him nor be considered for higher paying jobs, yet Muschamp got EVERYTHING from UF PLUS $1,500,000 from Auburn...Dude is BOSS !

Gators athletic director Jeremy Foley said he understands "the angst" surrounding former coach Will Muschamp's recruiting successes at Auburn at UF's expense.

Muschamp, the Tigers' defensive coordinator, played a critical role in Auburn signing five-star defensive end Bryan Cowart and four-star linebacker Jeffery Holland, both of Jacksonville and high-profile Gators' recruiting targets.

Muschamp also helped flip the commitment of Atlanta Lakeside offensive tackle Mike Horton and secure of the signatures of wide receiver Ryan Davis of St. Petersburg and athlete Javarius Davis of Jacksonville.

But Foley said Muschamp is "free to make a living like anyone else." UF fired Muschamp on Nov. 30 after four seasons.

"We terminated his contract," Foley told reporters on Monday. "We said we needed to go in a different direction. He's free to work. He's free to go get a job. He's free to do his job. I imagine Auburn was recruiting some of those guys before he got up there.

"And Will's a good recruiter. So is Jim McElwain. Look what he did on Signing Day, look at what he did a couple of day prior to Signing Day. We’re all fine. I get it, like I said, it’s good conversation, it’s angst, but, you know, we terminated Will’s contract.

"He’s free to go make a living like anybody else."

Auburn hired Muschamp to be the Tigers' defensive coordinator 13 days after UF let him go with three years remaining on his contract.

Muschamp's contract at UF will pay him a buyout of around $6.3 million, but did preclude him from recruiting against his former school, unless his new school already had contact with the player.

Foley said he would not have handled Muschamp's contract differently, but said UF will consider mitigation as it structures coach Jim McElwain's deal.

"We’re still working through those details," Foley said."Again, I’m not, you know, really hung up on that. I know some people are. Will didn’t work at all and we’re still paying him the same amount of money. That’s the world we live in.

"This is the big leagues. These coaches have a tough job, these coaches are in demand. When you’re negotiating contracts with them. I’m not really worried about that. I also expected Will coach here a long, long time. I certainly expect Mac to be here a long, long time."

One can only wonder whether Golden also BOSS to UM with that undeserved extension running through what must like eternity... but AD Foley realizing that Muschamp BOSSed UF says now that he's re-considering not giving new coach McElwain such sweetheart deals. Don't think McElwain will work out; dude took a gig without even getting all details worked out, while his boss talking out taking money out of his mouth. Still, be that Muschamp and Golden are friends, I wonder if their agents consulted on ******** these Universities in the Sunshine state.

Foley is a clown when it comes to contracts and throwing money around. If remember correctly, he gave Urban a sweetheart deal when he walked away with a stomach ache, too - only to jump back in the business a year later.

If a school terminates a contract it can't stop a coach from coaching. The payout could be mitigated by whatever he makes at his next job, but you can't stop him from working if you fire him.

LULZ at the suckers who believed Shannon was turning down lucrative gigs because UM wouldn't let him work.

Randy Shannon turns down Terps defensive coordinator job.

Former Miami coach would have lost $1.5 million in buyout money if he took the Maryland position.

February 15, 2011|By Jeff Barker, The Baltimore Sun

Former University of Miami coach Randy Shannon has declined an offer to become Maryland's defensive coordinator, according to a source with knowledge of the talks.

Shannon had been offered the job last week, and had returned to his home and talked with representatives of his old school [UM] .

When he got back in touch with Maryland, he told the school that he stood to lose about $1.5 million in Miami buyout money if he signed on with Maryland, the source said.

Miami signed Shannon to a new four-year contract on May 12, 2010. When he was dismissed after a 7-5 regular season, the Associated Press reported that he was expected to receive a buyout of about $1.5 million.

Shannon did not return a call seeking comment Tuesday. A Miami source said the buyout agreement Shannon signed contained a provision under which he would relinquish money if he took another football job.

Miami did not confirm the $1.5 million figure. The source declined to discuss any of the specific figures in the buyout.

Miami opens the 2011 season against Maryland on Labor Day.

The hiring of Shannon, 44, a top recruiter, would have completed the staff of Maryland coach Randy Edsall, who was hired last month.

Maryland must replace former defensive coordinator Don Brown, who had been a holdover from former Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen's tenure. Brown left unexpectedly for the same position at Connecticut, saying he wanted to be closer to his family in New England.

Sounds like Randy wanted to make a salary on top of his buyout and UM was going to limit his buyout based on the salary of his new position. So the concept that Randy was going to lose 1.5 mil was disingenuous at best.

If someone pays you $1,500,000 to do nothing but sit at home and/or for traveling & chilling, then it's money in the bank.

If another approaches you with an offer of $1,5000,000 for a job in your field, then you have to go to work everyday and labor in your field.

Now, if the former says that if you take the offer from the latter, the original sit down money will be withdrawn then guess what? You have LOST 1,500,000 MILLIONS because in order for you to take the new job, the old $1.5Mil is forfeited. Basically, if you'd accept the latter, you HAVE to WORK now while losing the 1,500,000 that was for FREE.

If you still can't decipher that, just think of the time value of money.

Time is money.

In the meantime, Muschamp is collecting ALL of his UF money because Muschamp and Golden had bad AS$ agents, while collecting the new $1,500,000 from Auburn yearly. and getting paid $2+M at UM while failing miserably, respectively.

Both you and The Franchise are wrong on this Shannon deal, but I won't neg anyone.

I saw nothing of any actual substance there.

And like I said, a subsequent job could mitigate the buyout. Look up "mitigate" before you think you're proving me wrong. There's nothing in that conjecture-filled article stating that UM could in any way have stopped Shannon from taking another job.

Com'on Mane,

You're splitting hairs ! What kept Radio from taking the jobs was UM's $1,500,000. Had UM allowed him to keep the $1,5000,000, a la UF AD Coley, while taking the Maryland job, that UM money would NOT have stopped him from taking either the U of MD or the UCLA Coordinator offers. What you're also wrong about is selling an implication that Radio was not wanted nor offered any coordinator-level salary after leaving the U... That is simply not true. Radio wanted to chill too, but only after realizing that he couldn't work on his craft and also get a free check from UM, a la Muschamp. I have proved that with the article from Maryland's largest periodical, the Baltimore Sun. Now, you're on point on most discussion, but here you're clouding into trivial quibbling and being merely reduced to logical fallacy of nitpicking and chopping; a far cry from your innumerable reasonable posts.

But, yet ... Jedd Fisch is willing to coach at Michigan for a discount because Jacksonville still owes him a year's salary?

Why can't all coaches be like Jedd Fisch ... And take less money, because they're still getting paid from another school?

... Oh wait ... You mean Muschamp had multiple offers for his services, and could leverage the market to raise his salary?

... So, Fisch accepting $200K means?? ... Never mind - it doesn't fit the narrative.

And definitely ... Muschamp's agent is a BEAST! Worth every penny!

Nobody hates Foley more than I do, but he makes UM look like the romper room negotiators they are, and he sucks bad.
