MTSU Post-Game Analysis (****ed Off (But Rationale) Fans Only)

Not saying we have a turnaround; just saying it's a possibility, and we need to see how this team responds to adversity. Imho, we can't write an obituary of this staff four games into its first season. Changes need to be made, and we got outcoached. That godawful team we had last year was 2-4 going into week six before we won the next 5/6 against some decent teams. Gotta see how this team responds.
We saw how this team responds to adversity when we were down 10-0.

If if if. I don’t see anything good coming this year. hope I’m wrong. All that goodwill created in the off-season is gone.

I agree it sucks, but it's "if" until things start working. Imho this is a 3-4 year rebuild. Two years until we're a consistent 9-win team with good recruiting. We've only had five 9-win seasons since 2005. Our culture has sucked for just as long. It's gonna be a slog.

I’ve seen this post for 19 years straight. Just mail it in. We won’t exceed your expectation. Just mail it in brother

I understand and respect that point of view, but I disagree. I always thought this would be a big rebuild. I'm definitely an optimist, but I'll wait till the season's over to do a top to bottom eval. Still though, today was inexcusable.

Hard if not understandable. Baffled. TVD getting killed, but this is not on him.
TVD has been utter dog**** this season - it absolutely has been on him.

It's one thing if he wasn't processing the offence (he's not) and was struggling to go to the right guy. It's another thing entirely when you're missing receivers by yards.

Something's wrong with him. His body language is completely off, and tbh the team just doesn't look like it wants to follow him. Completely different when Garcia came in.

I'm not close enough to the programme to know what's wrong, but yeah the team came to life when Garcia came into the team. They obviously prefer him.

Obviously we then just watched a G5 WR roast our CB to take the air out of our sails.

TVD has always seemed like a quiet guy. Garcia comes across as a natural leader. It's concerning to me that no one was talking to TVD on the sideline after getting benched, other than Restrepo.

Nothing succeeds like success…
100%. Success isn't gonna come easy to these guys. Call me an optimist or even an idiot, but I think it will be long-term. 18 years of mediocrity isn't gonna be fixed overnight, especially with a roster that went 28-21 over the past four years.

You hit and missed IMO, but this one drives me nuts and I've seen it said multiple times on this board tonight.

"Jake Garcia has an opportunity to take over as QB1 and stay there. He did a nice job tonight but missed some passes (Arroyo wide open in the back of the endzone)."

I like what Jake brings, but that wasn't on Jake there. Mallory was uncovered and credit to the MTSU defender, he broke off his coverage on Arroyo making an outstanding play on Mallory. I don't know the name of the defender, but that was an outstanding play.

Jake had to rush that throw or maybe he hits Arroyo on the corner route, but if not then he hits wide open Mallory. Two defenders were in his face at release and on him in a split second, one was airborn.

He missed some throws, tough spot to be brought in. Coverage changed after his first drive, they dropped back and didn't stack the box like they did with TVD. They played to keep everything in front of them at that point.

This offense will look better with him, but the play calling will limit his impact. He's a gunslinger though and will challenge defenses.

Yes, I know it will take time. I’m ready for that. But I’ve got to tell you, this game really shook my confidence in this coaching staff….Something is fundamentally wrong…

I don't disagree. I think there's three huge issues here:
  1. Roster --> we've had a decade or more of terrible evals. We have superficial talent, not real talent. We need to stack classes to turn things around.
  2. O Scheme --> Gattis could still work out, but his scheme doesn't look like a good fit for what we have right now. Maybe it will with a class or two, but it doesn't in the present. He may go the way of Enos at this rate.
  3. Culture --> it's been broken for 18 years, and will take time to fix. It won't happen overnight.

Didn't see any replay of that play, so didn't catch the break-off from MTSU. In that case, great play. I do think this offense will look better with Garcia.

No worries, it's all good. I watched that play several times.

I hate doing this, but that was the best designed play Gattis has called in the red zone. It may be the best designed play he has had here.

He completely fooled them on that one. Arroyo, to his credit didn't put his hands on the defender, it really was just a great play by their defender. If the defender stays on Arroyo, Mallory walks into the end zone.
