more blitzing

clearly we know we will see more blitzing but this comparison is pretty striking. greater than 30 percent more sacks for diaz led defenses than ours over the same period???

### UM people expect a lot of blitzing under new defensive coordinator Manny Diaz. Consider: Over the last four seasons as a coordinator (two with Texas before his September 2013 firing, 2014 with Louisiana Tech and 2015 with Mississippi State), Diaz’s defenses had 133 sacks. Miami’s defense, during those four years, had 93.

If Kuligowski and coach the DL the way he has at Missouri, Diaz will be able to pick and choose when to be aggressive, instead of relying on it to get pressure on the QB.

if we can get to the point where we can put on significant pressure with 4 down linemen, i'm not sure how i'd react.

Kuligowski is the key to this whole thing. Richt better keep him happy. If he does what I think he can do we might be able to mask Diaz's past deficiencies.

The thing with Diaz's defense and Kool getting our line ready to play is that we can boost our sack total substantially without having to blitz.

The reason we were all ****ed about the lack of blitzing is that we never got home with our front 4, not because blitzing all the time is the key to great defense.

That 93 number for us is meaningless when you realize that those blitzes were accompanied by absolutely no penetration by the freakin' D-line. As was mentioned, Kuligowski is key to this entire deal.

Yup if he is as good as everyone says, which I believe is can the defense's 20+ stat(receptions over 20 yards) should be the lowest in Manny Diaz's career because the line will win one-on-one more often

That's roughly one more sack a game. I expected the differential would be more dramatic, considering how awful Donofrio's scheme is.

Hopefully, we'll get even more sacks, given the athletes we have in our front seven.

Was just about to post literally the exact same thing. You are absolutely correct. Kuligowski is the one piece that could transform Diaz's aggressive yet flawed defenses into a dominant Miami defense.

A huge % of our sacks were in games against ****** teams like FAMU and Bethune. Numbers can hide that.

I also think you have to take into consideration hurries/bad passes and INTs that result from putting pressure on the QB. That's something our defense rarely did under Golden's bull**** scheme.

We would get all our sacks against the scrub teams and non against the good ones.

How about tackles for loss is 494-318 in the last 5 years.

Wow that is an amazing difference. Almost can't believe a team like Mississippi state is that far ahead of us in that department

Can't wait to see Coach Kool with this talent

When it comes to Coach Kuligowski, I'm more curious to see what he does in the offseason with the DL. If he's as good as he appears to be, the physical changes guys make in the offseason will be far more important come game day. Time to trim the fat and get guys like CThomas and DJax back to their explosive ways. Too many guys are carrying bad weight that slows them down. In order to be effective in this scheme, Coach Kuligowski's work has to start immediately with the strength and conditioning coaches to get these 4 and 5 star DLineman to where they need to be physically. If that happens, look out.

43.01% more sacks for Diaz during the same time frame. The fact of the matter is that sack % is volatile year to year and doesn't correlate like one might expect.

What I'm truly more interested in is the number of QB disruptions we are able to generate (hurries, hits, sacks). This number tends to correlate year-to-year quite well and eventually the sack percentage will regress to the mean.

Getting a QB to hurry, feel pressure that isn't there (called seeing ghosts), hits, sacks, pressures leading to inaccurate throws etc. Our previous system allowed QB's to just stand there and be comfortable all game as if it were a 7-on-7 drill. That'll work against the Kirby Freeman's of the world, but against even an average QB that sort of system will make average QB's look like Heisman candidates.

Here are his QB hits and pass break ups

Diaz
QB Hits. PBU
260 272

DNO
QB Hits. PBU
94. 205

Hits 260-94 is what I'm excited about

Sacks are a byproduct of an aggressive defense. Sacks are also a product of the skills of players you have at DLs, LBs and DBs. What we should be looking at is 1) How many times are we blitzing, 2) Are the Blitzes resulting in QB pressures and mistakes, 3) Are the blitzes being disguised, 4) Are the blitzes being productive, etc., etc., etc. In my opinion and after watching a couple of MSU games this year, taking our players skills and DL coaching into consideration, our Defense should be much improved this year. This is of course if Diaz follows the same defensive process he did at MSU.
