If the going rate is $5-$6 a month for a "membership" what does $60 a month get you? Can someone be a moderator for that? If someone paid $600 a month can they derail every thread they want with spam and call anyone who disagrees with them a **** or Cuck?
Asking for a friend.
In all seriousness the membership proposal does weed people out - the people who won't pay to discuss opinions on a message board. Hence why many posters here likely aren't on other boards - they have no interest in paying for this. Paid message boards scream "safe space for wealthy old people". Young people pay to post on message boards. I'm 32 and grew up with free music, free content, free tv, free movies. No way am I paying to discuss football. I can't see how anyone younger than me would either. If you don't think there are many fans who are terrible posters who would gladly pay to be on this board you're being a little naive.
I was part of a NY Giants message board a while back that relied on "donations" because the message board was "not for profit"... It has become a bunch of 70+ year olds yelling at the sky and any new fans being berated or banned for disagreeing with long time posters or contributors. Anything slightly off topic gets posts taken down and/or people banned. Moderators are mostly people who retired years ago and made sizeable "donations" to the website. It's an old white guy country club - but on the internet.
I don't see how charging for something automatically weeds out content you don't like.
You absolutely will pay, because you’ll need to get Canes content somewhere. Assuming you aren’t a troll or bad actor, you might hold out for 6 months...possibly even 9 months to a year, but eventually you’ll break. The urge for Cane information from this site (especially if it’s far cheaper) will be too powerful, because you’ve already received a “taste.”
You might’ve “grown up” with access to free music, free TV and free movies, but that was a way to create brand stickiness, and you’re paying for ALL that now, as they slowly introduced fees.
You are paying for either for Spotify, Hulu, Apple Music, YouTube TV, Netflix and AT&T now. Young and old pay for these services, and if you aren’t, you’re one of the rare few that isn’t.
This site can and should deploy a similar strategy. They’ve already created brand stickiness with a large subscriber base, and now it’s time to introduce fees to weed out the craziness and cull the heard. You’ll pay it.
