Mike Ryan Scoop--11/22/2021 The Dan Lebatard Show

Oregon's current offensive coordinator didn't coach Herbert.

Herbert was coached by Marcus Arroyo. Arroyo was hired by Willie Taggart and was co-OC with Mario under Taggart. When Taggart took the FSU job, Mario got promoted to head coach and he kept Arroyo as his OC. Arroyo got the HC position at UNLV and Mario hired Joe Moorehead as OC for the 2020-2021 seasons. Moorehead has had success as an OC and HC but he's been inconsistent. He was OC at Akron and then UCONN the year they went to the Fiesta Bowl. He then went 38-13 as head coach at Fordham. He parlayed that into an OC gig at Penn State. HIs offense at PSU averaged 37.6 and 41.4 points per game during his two seasons there. He took the Mississippi State HC job after Mullen got hired by Florida but got fired after the 2019 season. His offenses at Oregon have averaged 31.3 and 32.7 points per game respectively. Good but nothing spectacular. He runs a power spread that relies on a mobile quarterback similar to Dan Mullen and Urban Meyer's offensive systems. I don't think Mario is attached to him particularly so, he might or might not end up here should Mario be the guy. Personally, I'd prefer they keep Lashlee but they could do a lot worse.
Arroyo getting the UNLV gig was like christmas for Oregon fans, they hated him (imagine us with Blake Baker or Enos or someone like that).. Only on outside looking in will people look at that as a positive but he was not revered in UO and they celebrated him on way out.. I know @DMoney mentions his name as HC under Cristobal as a positive but UNLV is a wasteland where corching goes to die, I just realized who he was talking about when he says two Cristobal OCs have become HC, dude was terrible and got a parachute outta town, it happens..

Love that Mario is the clear and far away #1 choice but please God someone tell this guy to get himself a top flight OC who can keep TVD on his current trajectory... Or ****, keep Lashlee for all I care! But we absolutely cannot allow TVD to be neutered the way Herbert was at Oregon. Would be an absolute travesty and the fans would turn on Mario in his first year if this happened because we have seen what TVD is capable of in a certain type of offense. I am really concerned about this factor when hiring Mario.
He'd be too damned expensive to fire. I have real concerns with nepotism here.

It was weird, Mike said that Blake kinda ****ed off this Columbus Power contingent personally with something that went down before the FSU game. Said that he was told by Frenk by way of this group to start buyout talks with Manny but he refused to because it would be cheaper to fire him after Duke. This was one of the reasons James was let go then and there. He speculates that this was an ask that was a means to an end for Blake. Just strange.
That isnt exactly what was said in the earlier podcast. What the Golden Canes guy stated to Le Betard, et al, was Blake had irritated x, y, z for sometime starting earlier this year/season/whatever. Then the Columbus Crew asked Flake for something prior to FSU game. He blew them off/failed/whatever forcing Columbus Crew to reach out to FSU contacts to make whatever it was happen. Combined with 4th and 14 and the L, the Columbus Crew then allegedly decided enough was enough with James.

He looked significantly better right out of the gate in the NFL then he did in college. This is a fact. Spin it how you like 🤷🏻‍♂️
Two things: Herbert was actually pretty good in college. Just not what we’ve seen in the NFL.

Second, I’d blame the OC/QB coach for lack of college production. I mean, I’m not giving Manny credit for TVD. Why would I blame Mario for Herbert?

It’s mind boggling the revisionist history here.

Yes, Herbert is exceeding many expectations in the NFL. That’s because most young quarterbacks don’t perform this good this quickly.

You don’t become a top-6 pick in the NFL draft with average or even above average college credentials. You are elite at this level and build your stock. He didn’t magically become a top pick.

Herbert was great at Oregon and he’s been great in the NFL.

Herbert was the 6th overall pick and looked good since his first game in the NFL. Without a normal training camp and no preseason.

This is a testament to how well coached he was in college.

Herbert is the man but let’s not act as if he doesn’t have ten fold better situation in LA. A good OL, a Swiss Army knife at RB, and one of the most dangerous receiving corps in the game. Along with going from a solid OC his first year to one of the best. Herbert ain’t doing it by himself. Stop it.

He got drafted into a wayyyy better situation than Tua did and if the roles were reversed I guarantee you Tua would look way better and Herbert would not look as brilliant if he was in aqua and orange.

Exactly. His senior season was 67% completions 3471 yards 32TD 6 INT

The dude threw 95 touchdown passes in college and is second on Oregon’s all time passing yards list.

Why recreate the wheel? Just retain Rhett until he gets hired away to a HC spot. The OL needs to be completely fixed with depth but Mirabal is absolutely capable of that. That makes the most sense to me. We are having success on the offensive side of the ball. Fix the rushing attack and fix the defense. Will equate to faster success and faster perception of success for recruiting.

Dude just face it Herbert is better than Tua and it’s not even close. Tua benefited from having a player at every position better than the opposing player. Herbert played with one great Lineman (Sewell) and a bunch of average Joe’s and won consistently. Herbert is taller, throws further, is more accurate, runs just as fast and has better poise. If we asked the dolphins right now if they would trade QBs they wouldn’t even take time for a single breath before saying yes.

Is Mirabal better than Justice?

Fans are more impressed with throwing for 400 yards and 5 TDs a game. While nice, admittedly, this doesn’t always indicate elite talent and coaching.

Dwyane Haskins threw 50 TDs his last season at Ohio State. How’d that go?

Could the Oregon offense featured more Herbert throwing? Maybe, but I don’t remember the Oregon WRs and TEs drafted into the NFL.
