Was dubbed "Miracle Man" in a story reflecting on his past. Now UM hopes he can be the miracle that spurs this much-maligned defense.Certainly when Wyche arrives on campus next month he'll have beaten the odds. There was so much adversity.Growing up in Chesapeake, Virginia there was gang violence, including getting shot at during a robbery attempt when he was a ninth-grader. He grew up with his father in prison - he is serving a 40-year sentence handed down in 1996 for malicious wounding.
-Then last year came more heartache while the 6-foot-4, 340-pounder was finishing up his work at Monterey Park (CA) East Los Angeles College.
-His mother died of cancer in February, and on top of that one of his college counselors who was serving as his mentor committed suicide. An additional blow: one of his cousins was murdered by her fiancee.
-If that wasn't bad enough, there was even more to overcome when it came to his college choice of Miami. Wyche was told earlier this year he couldn't attend UM because of an ACC rule that he had to attend the same junior college for three consecutive semesters. He decommitted briefly, then ultimately decided to do what he always did ... persevere. He appealed for a waiver of the rule ... and won.
-Now the next chapter of his life is on track: His Miami arrival is set for next month.
puts it all in perspective very simply: "I'm just happy to be in this situation,"
-Is focused on doing well in school and helping out the Cane football team. He says he's working hard for what many expect will be an immediate starting role at defensive tackle.
Step 1 for him: Losing weight.
-Says "I'm just focusing on getting in tip-top shape," "I'm in the process of trimming down. I played last season at 345, am now getting down to 330. I'm 339 right now and I'll be at 330 by the time I arrive. I'm working really hard in the weight room."
-Also is getting a jump on the playbook.
-Says "I've been studding it and understand a lot of it," "It's really clicking. I just can't wait to get out there to rep it. That's the most important part."
-He'll be repping it soon enough. Wyche says he's set to arrive for summer session I in early May, although he says he is still awaiting final clearance.
-Says "I'm still waiting on a little stuff here on the NCAA end (with the Clearinghouse), but it's about to come through,"
-Says Hurricane coaches stressed to him how important it is he come in ready to play.
-Says "They just told me man, come in and work hard and try to change some things (on the defense)," "I just want to come in and make an impact, do as much as I can. I'll go fast and be physical. I'll work hard and let the rest take care of itself. I just hope I can dominate."
-junior college coach Steve Mojarro says he thinks his star player can "definitely" make an immediate impact at UM.
-Says "Everybody we played game-planned around him - he always drew a double team and we even have film where he drew a quadruple team," Mojarro said. "He's definitely ready. The pressure will be on him when he gets there because he has to play right away. He's excited, can't wait to get on the field."
