Now, I realize that 80% of those reading this have no idea what I'm talking about, but I'm failing to understand why this bloke is on every special team when someone more athletic and perhaps more effective could take his place. This isn't quite like Jimmy Murphy who made several tackles on kickoff. Our coverage teams are dreadful and it's only a matter of time before we allow the next back-breaking special teams touchdown. I'm sure he's a good kid who deserves a shot once in a while but don't understand the hard-on Patke and Diaz have for him on specials.

it is a horrible trend imo that predates Manny. for whatever reason we have rewarded hard work in this way. not giving walk on some snaps when games are over, but instead making them starters on special teams. On punts we have a punter , a walk on long snapper and another walk on. That means we have only 8 athletic guys vs 11. on kick returns i think we have two walk ons. it is insane. puts us at a disadvantage. When i started a thread about this a year or so ago, i was met with people telling me it is not a big deal because specails are not as important anymore. Almost everything is fair caught. And there reasoning has made me less angry, but i still think it is tupid as ****.

We’ve given up one (1) punt return over 20 yards in 8 games. It’s gonna be OK.

Pitt may have been kicking it short knowing that we'd try (and fail) to set up a return instead of taking the touchback. No idea who Patke thinks he is but if Brashard or anyone tries to return a kickoff tomorrow I'll be a hot potato.

So nobody ever misses a block on special teams? Huff had how many penalties last week? Why no discussion there?

You realize Parrott actually leads the team in special teams tackles with 2 solos and 2 assists. Absolutely not.

We are #8 in net punting. We've given up 18 yards on 8 returns. The App State kick return for a touchdown had zero to do with our two walk-ons who were on the right side of the formation. We gave up lane integrity and that includes James Williams who got suckered inside. Our freshmen made well a freshman play.

You want to argue that nobody is held accountable? I agree.

Quite frankly on kick returns we should be fair catching the ball unless the ball has a low trajectory and it looks like we can make something of it. You take the ball at the 25, period.

Ain't defending Patke. The dude is terrible and he needs to go.
 
Another special teams boggle is Jacolby George fair-catching everything inside the 10 yard line. Sometimes it's warranted but other times he'd be better served to let the ball go and see if it bounces into the endzone. Meanwhile, Lou Hedley can't pin anyone deep lately.

In fairness to Huff, one of his penalties was him getting caught retaliating on a Pitt player who provoked him. He also had a solo tackle on a kickoff last week. Parrott actually does seem to hover near the ball but he isn't Jimmy Murphy, and he's either missed tackles or has not gotten in position to make a play because he's 5'8 240. Michael Parrott isn't why we're 4-4, and maybe he'll force a fumble tomorrow and shut me up.
