Lost in the glory of whipping notre dame's *** last weekend was the fact that Michael Badgley achieved a truly amazing milestone as a UM football player. Last Saturday Michael Badgley surpassed Carlos Huerta's field goal record at UM. This deserves mention.

What a great achievement for Michael Badgley. A tip of the cap and a thread with your name in the title is most certainly warranted.

(And for the younger fans, please understand, as a kicker, any time your name is mentioned in the same breath as Carlos Huerta you know you've done something right.)

Carlos Huerta's College career[edit]

Huerta attended the University of Miami, where he was a walk-on kicker for the Miami Hurricanes football team from 1988 to 1991.[SUP][3][/SUP] During his four years as a starter, he led the Hurricanes in scoring.[SUP][3][/SUP] He still holds the Hurricanes career records for points after touchdowns (PATs), field goals, and total points, as well as the top three season records for consecutive PATs in a season, the top four season records for field goals, and the top three season records for points scored kicking and field goals in a game.[SUP][3][/SUP] As a senior in 1991, he was recognized as a consensus first-team All-American, having earned first-team honors from the Associated Press, the Walter Camp Football Foundation, Football News and The Sporting News.[SUP][3][/SUP]
He graduated from the university with a bachelor's degree in business administration, and was later inducted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame.[SUP][3][/SUP]
While at Miami, he was given the nickname "The Iceman" because of how cool he stayed no matter what the situation.[SUP][4][/SUP]

But in this thread we celebrate Michael Badgley. Congratulations, young man. You came to The U and made your mark in UM history.

Carlos Huerta was the Canes Kicker for 11 years

Well Done Badgley -- being anywhere near any of his records is a job well done!

Badge gives us a special teams edge in every game. Will be incredibly important if we take care of business and go into Charlotte unbeaten and on the cusp of a playoff berth.

Great job young man - keep it up!

The NCAA narrowed the width of the uprights on the goalposts during Carlos Huerta's career at UM. A reporter asked him if that change would affect him. Carlos responded in the negative and said "they didn't change the middle."

I’m oretty sure the length of his kickoffs is predetermined before he kicks. When he wants, he puts them in the end zone, I thinkojer times we are calling for a return.

He also said this about icing:

"That icing the kicker thing is the dumbest thing ever. But there aren’t any kickers who are head coaches and most of the coaches believe this false fallacy and they continue to do it and I just roll my eyes. If you’re a kicker that’s worth anything you want to be out there and be able to set up, make sure you’re understanding the wind, check you’re plant foot and make sure the grass isn’t going to give out from under you and other things. It’s just asinine."

Huerta was another guy who was a walk-on that became a very solid player (and AA) at Miami.
