Miami 36, Nebraska 33: Stop kneeling the clock out, coaches - Football Study Hall

In regard to the play bolded above ... STOP ELECTING TO KNEEL WITH SO MUCH TIME REMAINING, COLLEGE COACHES. No, Miami didn't have any timeouts left (and I don't believe the play-by-play data we receive includes timeouts, so Matt's probability tool can't do anything about that), so maybe the Hurricanes' real win probability wasn't quite 61.9%. Maybe it was only about 55%.

But like when I stay at 15 on blackjack even when the odds are slightly in my favor -- yes, I'm a chicken, just like the coaches I'm calling chickens -- coaches are forgoing odds out of fear more than reality (i.e. fear of what happened to Kansas City against Denver last week). But the worst-case scenario doesn't actually happen very often. You've got an awesome young QB and a fun receiving corps. Give them a chance to win the game.

Basically, the projected scoring margin is saying "Surely Miami didn't blow that many scoring chances..." Alas, they did! Going 5-for-5 on field goals is a lovely accomplishment for any college kicker ... but asking him to kick five field goals is an admission of failure. But first-and-goal from the 1 turned into fourth down from the 6. First-and-goal from the 8 turned into fourth down from the 10. Third-and-1 from the 19 turned into fourth-and-6 from the 24.

And then, of course, the Hurricanes asked Michael Badgley to kick a field goal on fourth-and-1 from the 11, up 30-10, even though a touchdown would have completely put the game out of reach.

There's risk involved in going for it, and I don't really blame Al Golden and company for not being confident in their ability gain one yard on fourth-and-1 ... but fourth-and-1 odds are always in an offense's favor. Miami dropped the dagger in like four different ways, and then Nebraska's offense found a rhythm against a depleted secondary late.

What happened to Folden's 4th down prowess? Wasn't he calling that the money down last week?

I'm sure the "brain trust" of Golden, Don't know and Coley will solve it:

I knew we were in trouble when Al sent in the field goal unit on 4th and 1 at the 11 in the 4th quarter that is the type of passive bull**** that allowed Nebraska to come back. You punch it in on that series and they quit!!!

Great point on that last field goal - everyone, and I mean EVERYONE at the game was booing when they sent out the FG unit on the 4th & 1 from the 11. It didn't make a lick of sense to kick the FG in that situation, especially with how we were owning the line of scrimmage. There were a lot of people at the game, including myself, who felt that if we got that conversion + the TD, Nebraska would have started bringing in their 2nd/3rd string players (10 mins left in the game, 37-10 = GG).

FYI - I watched Yearby walk off the field when the FG unit came on and he immediately walked over to Coley. I'm assuming he wasn't very happy with the decision.

That call is on Golden - he needs to have a better feel for the players on the field and the affect of getting the 1st + TD on the opponent/crowd. We had Nebraska in the corner, yet he was unwilling to throw the knockout punch.

seems like every dam time we get a big lead we think that we dont have to play the game the right way and guys start half assing it thinking that we got this game in the bag. golden should be giving them an earful when they become complacent right in the middle of the game. yes the way run the scheme is pathetic but my gosh. we got in a fight and we just sat there and let the opponent get up instead of putting our foot on their throat. but oh we sure do have team chemistry and leaders that were there to stop it. but oh we won right and thats all that matters lol. AL GOLDEN IS A USED CAR SALESMAN. PERIOD.

I recall a certain drive where, after all the redzone bungling he speaks of....a FG would have been intelligent up 30-10. We air it out almost the entire drive burning little to no clock....but successfully moving the ball...get well inside the redzone and almost throw a pick on the goal line.

A running play or safe play gets us in the endzone or sets up a more than 3 score lead at 33-10, instead we run the one play that has been more publicized in Spring and Fall camp than maybe even our weak efforts versus ISIS...the vaunted fade route to any number of our 6 foot 3 plus guys, in this case, Dobard.

Now, I'm not calling Nebraska's DC a genius, but quite frankly, he didn't have to be to see that one coming. The entire drive consisted of plays demonstrating a desire to quickly put a dagger in the defense. That's all fine and good I guess when it is working...BUT ZERO CLOCK WAS WORKED, even when it could be to set up one well timed endzone shot. BUT RIGHT AFTER ALMOST GETTING PICKED?

This will be the height of all sacrilege for me, but I almost would have rather seen the (THANK GOD) somewhat extinct bubble screen that play....hope and pray for blocking, and when it likely gets blown up, then take the 23 point lead versus the turnover and momentum swing.

No way I can get excited by Coley with this many redzone failures. His playcalling is like a novice playing chess, there is no rhyme, reason or rhythm to most any of it.

That said, at least from Game 2 to Game 3, huge step up compared to Coach No D.
