The breakdown:
>>Virginia Tech, once again, has a solid defense. Bud Foster's group is top 30 in the country in:
Total Defense
Rush Defense
Pass Defense
Scoring Defense
Red Zone Defense
3rd Down Defense
Well, ****.
>>Michael Brewer will be the worst QB Miami has faced all season (excluding whoever FAMU trotted out). At 72nd in the country, Brewer has an awful QB rating. Of the previous 6 QBs we've played, he is easily the biggest pile of statistical garbage, sporting a pathetic 1:1 TD to INT ratio. He leads a bad Virginia Tech offense, one that checks in at an embarrassing 80th in the country.
>>Virginia Tech's running backs are in shambles:
- VT will be without second leading rusher Shai McKenzie after he suffered a torn ACL a couple weeks ago. He was averaging 5.1 ypc
- Leading rusher Marshawn Williams is questionable after rolling his ankle vs UNC. He sat out Saturday's game vs Pittsburgh, but is practicing.
- Sophomore Trey Edmunds is out with a broken clavicle after an impressive 10-touchdown freshman campaign.
>>Virginia Tech ranks an impressive 4th nationally in 3rd down conversion defense, allowing opponents to convert only 26% of their attempts.
- Miami is 124th - second to last in the country- in 3rd down offense. Miami converts on a putrid 24% of 3rd down attempts.
Strategy:
>>Defense
Miami should load the box and aim to shut down the run. The goal should be to force Brewer to beat them by getting him into 3rd and longs. Make him uncomfortable by bringing pressure, knowing he is not skilled enough to burn you all night. He is turnover prone. We need to stop them on early downs to do this.
The issue? We are on the road. Our coach subscribes to the "bleed me out over 30 days with multiple cuts instead of shooting me in the head" theory. A fan of the slow, torturous death. Will we force a subpar QB to beat our skilled --despite what the staff says-- secondary? Or continue to be fearful of big plays, conceding 5 yards a pop and watching as teams march up and down the field, hoping for a mistake?
>>Offense
We must win on early downs offensively. The OL has to dominate and we need stay on schedule to avoid 3rd and longs. This offense is pretty much the worst in the country at converting, the last thing we want is a 3rd and long vs a defense that excels at stopping them. Not a good scenario for a true freshman QB on the road.
>>Prediction:
Always a coward, Golden refuses to adapt. It didn't happen vs Nebraska and it didn't happen vs GT. No reason to believe in the middle of year 4 things change. VT picks up yardage against our timid defensive gameplan. Screenshots of questionable alignments will again make the rounds following the game. Despite this, Brewer is awful enough to help keep VT's offense in check.
We struggle offensively, posting another horrible 3rd down %, but our skill position talent and Kaaya are just enough to hit some big plays.
Miami - 24
