best guess is to make them punt and give the offense enough time to do something to get in FG range had they mess up the punt or we had gotten a good return

That is the only thing that makes sense, but why not try a play or two deep and tell TVD to throw it away if there is nothing there?

Answering my own question, probably b/c TVD hates throwing it away.
