Highsmith could not be stopped and JJ wanted Testaverde to hand it off BUT the offensive system by Stevens was to read the defense and check off. Testaverde keep checking off to passes and throwing Int's. To Paterno's credit they ran their defense so Vinny read pass, I wish JJ had put Geof Toretta in the game for a series or two, if I ever meet JJ I am going to ask him if he considered putting Geoff (Gino's brother) in or not. Geoff played the last regular season game because Vinny injured himself crashing his MoPed. Geoff had the most passing yardage in that final game then Vinny did in any game that year.

I watched the whole replay of the 1987 Fiasco Bowl from beginning to end. I never thought I’d watch even one minute of that game again.

Things are desperate without sports.

So I’m 37. Watching this game for the first time in my life. My first Cane memory is Wide Right I... don’t remember anything about the 87 Fiesta Bowl but after watching the first 5 minutes, how in the f*ck did we lose this game?!

5 ints and like 7 TO's overall. Vinnie couldn't figure out which white helmets to throw the **** ball to.

It could easily have been a lot worse. On top of the 5 passes that actually were intercepted, there were at least another 5 passes PSU easily could have intercepted. I forgot about all the near-interceptions until rewatching the game.

I'm never going to rewatch the 2003 Fiasco Bowl.

The 1987 Fiasco Bowl? I never thought I'd rewatch it until there ended up being no sports for a month and a half and counting.

Anyway, it wasn't decided by an officiating call like the 2003 Fiasco Bowl, so it's a little more tolerable to watch.

Frankly, this was about as badly played as a game between the #1 and #2 teams could possibly be. It easily could have passed for a Liberty Bowl matchup between 6-5 teams.

I have no idea why it's considered a classic.

It was a classic because both teams were undefeated , 1 vs 2, and arguably the best defenses in college football

This was my first game watching growing up in Pittsburgh and I remember crying because they lost and my dad teased me about it but a cane fan was born and still rep the orange and green strong here...

Vinny was off (way off), and we should have run the ball 60 times. Alonzo was gashing them, but only had 18 carries (for 119 yards). Whether that's on Gary Stevens for calling those plays or Vinny checking to passes, I don't know. Vinny never should have thrown 50 passes.

If you are into this sort of self inflicted pain, find the Hail Flutie game and watch it over and over again. Not the slow torture of 87 not as meaningful but painful none the less. Actually, I don't think there is a "Fiesta Bowl" or game in AZ that ever ended anyway but painful for Canes. I hate the whole frigging state for no reason other than Cane games.
