Penn State has been pretty consistent under Franklin, made the semi’s last year and is ranked 2nd going into this season. Yet it you look at the recruiting rankings Miami has far out recruited them. Our last 3 classes are 7, 4, and 14. Penn State is 14, 14, 15. We also have much higher ranked portal classes.

Franklin is ridiculed constantly by his fan base for his inability to win the big games. At quarterback I’d take Beck over Allar 7 days a week.

It should be interesting watching the season play out in comparison.

Franklin is going on year 11. If Mario is going on year 11 at this point and hasn't won a natty... I think we'd all be tired of him as well.

With the exception at WR, StatePenn recruits very well. Their in-state HS kids are relatively loyal to the program outside a few that end up at ND or other Big10 schools. They also strong recruiting footprints in New Jersey, DMV, Tidewater area of VA and the Carolinas. I would say their recruiting is on par with UM save the WR position. Their big problem is that Ohio State has similar recruiting advantages plus they are able to recruit elite WRs from anywhere in the country. I think this is due to location. All things considered, Franklin is a solid coach.

Penn State recruits well and has plenty of talent. The real tell is the NFL draft - multiple quality selections & not fringe guys. Knock on Franklin is he can’t win the big one - ie Ohio State & Michigan. Team is loaded this year, so natives will be really restless if he falls short again.

So Columbus is more attractive than than Nittany Valley? That is what comes with being,, more or less, in the geographic center of the state.

Their problem is & has always been QB/Offense.

They recruit really well in the Ternches. They have NFL high round caliber players on Defense on an annual basis. They produce good TE's & RB's.

But what they never get right is the QB & having a viable Offense that can go beyond just winning Winter time B1G ball.

They design their teams to be able to have slug fests with Michigan, Mich ST etc.. late in the year when it's cold; but what they haven't been able to figure out is how to get past OH ST. And the reason why they can't is because Oh ST always has the better QB & the better Offense overall.

1. How about we compare Year 11 Mario to Year 11 Franklin?
2. Because rattling off recent recruiting class rankings shows how they've recruited acording to the sites and more importantly, those players are just now starting to be regular real players. No, I'm not talking about Mauigoa types. I'm talking the bulk of the recruits don't play real snaps until year 3 and 4.
3. Penn State has played 7 or 8 home games for the better part of 25 years. As a matter of fact, they kind of pioneered it. 12 game schedules used to be 6 home, 6 away with an occasional season of 7 home games as some sort of anomaly. Back in the mid 90's that started changing and it is a significant advantage.
4. Their non-conference games are generally a joke. This will likely change slightly as the B1G and $EC further attempt to hog all the tv revenue, but until all 12 regular season games are mandated to be B!G/$EC games, they're non-conference games will continue to feature schools like Idaho, Ball State, Kent State, et al.

This isn't some sort of Mario-slurper post although I'm certain that I'll be labeled as such. It's about making fair comparisons.

God bless

Moved back to PA after 45 years is MA. I enjoy telling all their rabid fans that, when I went to high school, Penn State was everybody's safety school. It has probably the highest in-state student tuition rate in the country because it, like Pitt and Temple, are state-related and not legally state universities.

Does pedo St recruit sofla? Texas? I think that’s the biggest issue. I believe for years Joe pa wanted nothing to do with a “Miami athlete” or the Deep South and then the shower scandal cost them the ability to effectively recruit the south once he was gone.

I've never been to Columbus, but I know folks who have worked in the city doing consulting and stuff. They are based out of Maryland and northern VA. They said Columbus is not bad. They have enough of restaurants and other stuff to keep them entertained after work hours. I've been to State College on several occasions, mostly for games, and that place is in the middle of nowhere and the culture kind of reflects it. I can see African-American kids from inner-city not feeling the area. Of course, they get those kids from DMV, Jersey and Philly but this is due to being close to their home and family. State College reminds me of Blacksburg, VT's location. Lots of mountains and farm animals.

It is really crazy how they have had problems recruiting QBs as Pennsylvania produces a lot of college and NFL QBs.
It would be like UM having issues recruiting WRs and DBs.

/stepping aside for comments. Lol.

Very high floor program right now. Consistently good staffs and across-the-board talent. But in the 3-4 games that decide the season, they will lose 2 of them. This is because there is always a glaring roster hole, and inevitably it bites them in the games against the best competition.

They will totally dominate weaker teams (something I wish we did), but will look very average against top-level talent. This is surely a driving factor in the criticism leveled against Franklin. PSU would be hard pressed to find a better program manager though.
