****Miami vs. Ole Miss ACC/SEC CHALLENGE GAME THREAD****

Plenty of good. Plenty of improvement. I think our Euros are getting more comfortable- maybe - I hope so. Not sure why the Israeli didn’t see any second half minutes. It’s a solid win. They got hot and made a run as we got cold and sloppy and we still took care of business.
Idgi either but hopefully that changes soon. 4-6 from 3 in the last 2 games

He’s horrific offensively but he’s actually providing solid minutes defensively
He does everything right on the floor besides providing anything offensively from a scoring perspective. If he continues to provide that all year he’s an outstanding big coming off the bench….. that is all L was missing from those teams that made runs but had zero depth with mainly no front court depth. Altuntas would have been perfect for those clubs

31st now in NET rankings which is 5th in the ACC behind Duke, Louisville, UNC and Clemson. Not trying to get ahead of ourselves, but there is a realistic pathway to a 12-2 record heading into January, and if we can somehow finish around .500 in conference play, we'd go over the 20 win mark and would likely be a tourney team.

Can the team practice FT and how terrible is Altuntas.

What a bunch of wasted minutes. Dude is like a baby giraffe who has no control over his body. He is really bad.
He’s not easy on the eyes but he’s also a quintessential Euro High PnR big and we are not set up to run any 4-out sets. On top off that he’s never seen a collapsed game like this. Even FIBA youth ball has more spaced court than college ball. It also doesnt help that we don’t have a real catch-n-shoot threat to open things up inside. There are signs that some 4-outs could be in the works. The biggest being seeing Shelton dribble drive from the wing. That was very Calipari-esque last night when he drove, drew the double team, and dumped to Reneau (or Ernest?). Beautiful ball and easier said than done.

The other thing that needs to happen is having a corner/wing catch and shoot threat. We really need Timo to step up here. He was a catch and shoot corner specialist in Europe. But in Europe they teach these types to find a seam. A FIBA ball has a lot more seam to get a finger on than an American ball. I at least hope this is the issue. He seems to hesitate when he catches sometimes which further makes me think it’s the case. He needs HOURS on the gun with an American ball in the next 4 weeks before we open up ACC play. That’s on him. He has to do that. He needs to be confident with finger not on a seam. If we can get defenses to worry about him it’s going to open up a lot, especially for Shelton against zone sets (Chaka Smart slot cuts would be perfect for him)

I will give praise to Altuntas and Timo for their zone defense. That is something that is taught well in Europe and actually carries over to the college game. Timo is really fast at reading situations and being reactive. He navigates closing out the wing or corner and gets back to the rim very decisively. He’s probably not going to be blocking any 3s like Shelton but the dude is very solid and 6’8. Altuntas makes the right decisions, his execution can just be , uh, “oh wow” sometimes lol. But he is definitely getting better.

From pre-season reading, I knew Altuntas was raw in terms of his offense. Maybe not quite this raw though. As you say, he has other ways to contribute.

I also think part of the issue is that @Peter Ariz compared him to someone like Segun when he is far from it.

Except he's not 'raw' in the sense that he's pretty crafty down low when he gets touches and tends to finish in close. The issue more is that he probably couldn't jump over a phone book and has the spatial awareness of a toddler.

Yeah, that’s just a set up for disappointment. In Euro Sengun played the corner and wing just as much as the high PnR. He was also a three point shooter and transition scorer. He was doing all of that as a teenager in Euro pro/intl ball.

I trust that Jai brought him in for a specific role, not to be an NBA All star.
