****Miami vs. No. 10 Florida GAME THREAD****

We're not that far off. This will be one of the best, if not, the best team we face all regular season long. If it 's only up from here, please sign me up. It's the team's first time playing together against top competition. The shooting from all 3 phases definitely needs to show improvement, but despite the loss, this team answered a lot of questions (competitiveness, defense, talent, toughness, etc.) tonight. Still have some remaining issues (shooting & depth) that need figuring out, but overall this team flashed some potential. Looks to me like Coach Jai has the foundation of a good ACC team that could make some noise later in the season depending on development of the team. GO CANES!!!

Florida didn't play particularly well, and Miami had plenty of opportunities to make this a game. That said, it's also obvious that the way this team is built precludes it from being anything special offensively. If it isn't a track meet, this team is useless. Be prepared to watch a lot of rock fights, because this team will struggle to score against anyone that doesn't commit a ton of turnovers and slows the game down.

After watching this team, I get what Coach Lucas wants to build. He wants to build a clone of what Kelvin Sampson has at Houston. In other words, a very athletic, defensively oriented team that can wear people out with pressure and speed. The problem is that if you are going to build a Grindhouse clone, you also need to have SOMEONE on the roster that can shoot. Guess what we don't have?

Malovec can shoot it. I’m not sure why we didn’t screen him any open looks in his limited minutes tonight.

The University of Miami men’s basketball team fell to 10th-ranked Florida, 82-68, Sunday night at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena.

Florida (3-1) took a 39-29 lead into the break. After Miami (3-1) scored the first basket of the game, the Gators responded with a 9-0 run that forced the Hurricanes to call a timeout. Miami answered and tied the game at 13 before taking an 18-17 lead. Florida regained control and pushed the margin to as many as 11 in the first half, holding the Hurricanes to 35.3% shooting.

Miami came out strong in the second half, cutting the lead to three, 44-41, with 16 minutes remaining behind six points from Tru Washington, a 3-pointer from Dante Allen and a bucket from Shelton Henderson. Florida was able to stretch its advantage, leading by as many as 19.

Malik Reneau led Miami with 22 points and 11 rebounds, marking his second-straight game with a double-double. Washington added 16 points, his fourth game in double figures, and Tre Donaldson added 11 points, six assists and four rebounds.

The Hurricanes return to action Thursday at the Watsco Center as they take on Elon at 7 p.m.

Was there live. Have many thoughts not many good. Thoughts below:

Tre Donaldson needs to get it together.i know jai recruited him to be more of a true point guard but he needs to play his game he’s played in college. If he doesn’t this season is going to be atrocious

We can’t switch everything like we did tonight. It was taking candy from a baby for UF when they knew we switched everything on the action. They hunted it and feasted on it

I would like to see us play small ball with Allen at the 4 or 5 instead of watching 11 out there

Nothing to say in regards to free throw shooting. Goes without saying

Didn’t get jais rotations tonight but understand it’s early.

Positives: Tru Washington

All in all I’m disappointed because this game played right into our favor and we simply couldn’t execute to even make it competitive.

I would be surprised if that Florida team is anything more than a bubble team in the sec

We were never going to win a game against the national champs in year 1, all we could have really hoped for was to be competitive

It was a tough pill to swallow in a game that was well within reach at moments even in hand at times. The second half the Hurricanes couldn’t come up with the shots necessary to upset No. 10 Florida in Jacksonville.

How did it all unfold in Jacksonville at the VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena? CIS’s Peter Ariz breaks it all down from his house following the loss.

Miami put up a tough battle against the No. 10 team in the country, the Florida Gators, for most of the game before Thomas Haugh hit a deep three-pointer to help the Gators seal the victory in the second half during their run.

Despite the loss, this will be one of, if not the toughest and most physical games the Hurricanes will play all season. Miami made some simple mistakes that could have cost them a chance to beat the No. 10 team in the nation.

Starting with the most obvious issue: free throws! You can't just be given free points and leave them on the board. Miami was 15 for 27 from the free-throw line, and while they started hitting their free throws in the late second half, they doomed themselves in the first half by going just 2 for 8.

That's 12 points left off the scoreboard. If the Hurricanes had made all their free throws, the final score would have been even closer at 82-80, even despite the turnovers. Miami totaled 10 turnovers and had poor decision-making.

Miami struggled against one of the best, if not the best, frontcourts in the nation, featuring Alex Condon and Rueben Chinyelu, as the Gators had the upper hand in rebounding, winning 47 to 41.

The Hurricanes just couldn't score in the paint; even when they did, it was a very physical game. Malik Renau finished with 22 points, but it was the toughest 22 points of his season. Miami was not a great shooting team today, finishing with 34 percent from the field and 28 percent from three-point range.

Even with the loss, Miami showed a lot. They went toe-to-toe with a top-10 team and had chances, which says a lot about where this group is headed. Fix the free throws, cut down a few of the mistakes, and this is a game Miami easily could’ve stolen. If anything, this proved the Hurricanes can compete with anyone on their schedule, and once they clean things up, they’re only going to get better from here. This is a learning game.

Watched on replay.

Quick thoughts:
-FTs lol
-what exactly does #11 offer?
-Malik was bullied around the basket
-Udeh was mostly MIA outside of that one screen
-Tru>Tre
-Shelton looked like a freshman

This is a game I didn't expect us to win. But this is a well coached team and we'll learn from it

Gators are the better team but we seemed out of sync.

Maybe it was their D. Have potentially 2 more competitive games coming in the next 4 games to see if we're close or if it just an illusion.

I like Reneau and the defensive guards. They have to shoot better.

I love the effort on defense and the physicality this team plays with.
If the offense can get better and they make 10+ three per game then this team will win 20+ games.
They do some good things defensively that can really carry this team far but they still need to make jump shots on the perimeter.
10 threes a game seems a very high bar for these players to reach.

Luckily (or due to our defense) UF only made four more threes than we had (9-29 v. our 5-18).

Dante Allen seems to have the green light (or at least a flashing yellow) for taking threes from Coach Lucas. Maybe Reneau can extend his mid-range game but at this point in his career, that may not be in the cards. Tre and Tru can have the odd hot night from the perimeter.

Bottom line: No real "lights out" 3 point gunner. Need a few from the Portal or HS ranks.

We held our own on the offensive glass. The Defensive boards was another story. FTs were abysmal. Only 56% on 27 attempts. That is very unlike Miami teams of the past. Henderson and Udeh were combined 4-12.

Udeh nearly airballed a couple of his free throws. Ugly.

Coaches need to make habitually terrible FT shooters shoot granny style. That would improve their percentages by a significant margin. If you are serious about winning, you shouldn’t care about how silly something looks, as long as it’s effective…
