Miami transfer guard Jalil Bethea commits to Alabama

I'm not disappointed in the least. It takes a special breed of jacka** to get on L's bad side, and Bethea did it within weeks of arriving on campus. He lacks maturity and I don't think a first time HC would be able to deal with Bethea's issues. Oats can take this on, if Jalil doesn't want to defend(which he doesn't), nor fill a defined role, he can easily move past him, because of the depth of their roster. Miami had to deal with his crap this season, and honestly, I didn't see a 5 star talent. I saw a dude that likely looked great in AAU ball, where no one plays defense and basketball IQ is a rumor.

Only 30 5 stars in each recruiting class in a 5 man sport? Then yeah, you should either be a baller or have a clearly defined role and this kid isn’t either.
I believe in basketball they should really lower it down. These kids can go to the league right out of high school and many have succeeded doing so. 10-15 5 stars is probably the sweet spot in hoops.

Ridiculous that bethea and the Timberlakes of the world were regarded as 5 stars

Breeze posted a screenshot of JZ’s comments about Lucas with a caption like “Calls to fire Jai Lucas already starting”

Yes, but the other side of the coin is certain posters supporting a 10-year extension for Jai because we got 3 recruits in 3 days. When we only need 10 or 12 more.

Just FYI - Bethea didn’t get on L’s bad side.

Bethea had plenty to learn and mature like almost every freshman… but he wasn’t on L’s bad side.

Ls handling of him indicates otherwise. It was obvious that L was getting tired of him, or maybe he was more a symptom of a larger disease. Either way, him leaving doesn’t really bother me.

He was just a freshman who had to learn and mature to reach his potential at this level. It wasn’t like he “used” an “injury” to sit out and get another year…

The biggest challenge surrounding Bethea was pressure associated with not getting a return on the NIL investment… but that was external and certainly not Bethea’s fault.

I’m not sure any of that matters. Apparently Jai wanted him or Able and they both said nope.

stop making up our own narrative.
Making up what? There's no other rational way to explain why a highly touted freshman, who was slated to get huge minutes managed to spend most of the season not getting time and when he did play, looked awful most of the time. Even when the season was obviously a lost cause, his minutes were inconsistent. This isn't the NBA, where tanking is a thing. We also all saw his terrible body language and effort throughout the season.

Yes he was. His agent was more important than his coach or team.
It was obvious that he wasn't coachable at times during the season, and I wonder how that is going to hold up at Alabama, where Oats coaches his guys hard. L is a lot more of a genteel, grandfatherly coach, which shouldn't be too stressful on players.

thats what you call talent acquisition

Was L frustrated with Bethea? Of course. But that’s an inherent part of the process. L uses the bench as a teaching tool and elite recruits with big NIL deals don’t respond well to that… that’s a part of why he retired.

Matt Cross got on L’s bad side. Bethea was not on L’s bad side… he just needed to mature and there was a lot of external pressure from expectations and NIL.
