ARLINGTON, Texas – The No. 8 Miami Hurricanes fell to No. 25 LSU, 33-17, at the 2018 Advocare Classic on Sunday.

The Hurricanes outgained the Tigers, 342-296, but were unable to overcome costly penalties, turnovers and field position in the season opener as they contributed to its own defeat nearly as much as LSU did at AT&T Stadium.

Less than five minutes into the game, sophomore defensive back Trajan Bandy was ejected for targeting after a hit on LSU wide receiver Dee Anderson. Instead of a hit that caused a LSU fumble on its opening drive, UM was unable to recover the fumble and lost a key starter on defense for the remainder of the game.

After teams exchanged a pair of field goals, Miami started to gain momentum towards the end of the first quarter until freshman kicker Bubba Baxa missed a 45-yard field goal attempt wide left.

The Tigers followed with 24 unanswered points over the remainder of the first half, led by running back Nick Brossette’s two touchdown runs and a 45-yard interception return by Jacob Phillips.

LSU was able to capitalize on eight Miami penalties to jump out to a 27-3 first half lead, which includes a defensive penalty on each of the Tigers’ four first half scoring drives.

LSU picked off Malik Rosier a second time when the redshirt senior, who was hit as he threw, sailed a pass intended for Mike Harley high and was intercepted by John Battle. The Tigers converted the turnover into another field goal that just skimmed over the crossbar to give LSU a 30-point lead with 3:51 remaining in the third quarter.

Wide receiver Jeff Thomas made an athletic catch on the LSU sideline to give Miami a boost late in the third quarter. Malik Rosier rushed for a three-yard touchdown to close the gap to 33-10 with 13:57 left in the game.

One possession later, Rosier and Thomas connected again for a 50-yard gain on third and long to keep the drive alive before freshman Brian Hightower hauled in a 32-yard touchdown from Rosier on the next play.

Back-to-back pass interference penalties on LSU moved Miami into LSU territory on its next possession, but the Tigers’ defense held firm and Miami turned the ball over on downs with 4:40 left in the game.

Senior defensive back Jaquon Johnson led the Hurricanes with 11 total tackles, while defensive linemen Gerald Willis III and Jonathan Garvin had seven tackles for loss and two sacks combined.

Rosier was 15 of 35 for 259 yards, but only has five total touchdowns and seven interceptions in the current Hurricanes four game losing streak dating back to late season.

Ahmmon Richards (knee) and Demetrius Jackson (knee) were the most serious injuries from tonight, but head coach Mark Richt said he doesn’t think either is serious.

Miami will play its second game of the season on Saturday, as they host Savannah State at 6 p.m. at Hard Rock Stadium.

Jaquon Johnson can't lead the team in tackles again this year. Where are the LBs?

Way below 50% and two ints that should have been three cause a LSU db let one slip right through his hands. Malik is gonna be the death of us

Reality check. Rosier has zero confidence on himself. You could see it in his face, in his mannerisms. Bigger problem, is how Cosch Richt dont see that.
Now penalties, bad Oline play, missed tackles, punter sucks, kicker sucks, horrendous calls by the refs all contributed to this loss. But the biggest problem is a QB that looked lost, looked confused, and showed no leadership on the sideline. The players know it and it was very clear on the sideline. We are who they thought we are. OVERRATED and that just sucks.

Agreed Qb play was atrocious hurt us more then anything. The refs surly didn’t help our case but we got ran off the field because we lost the field position battle. Richt has to address our special teams. They started multiple drives around the 50 because Feagles continues to punt like a 12 year old a parking lot and I thought we were gonna get something new with Baxa. I understand he’s just a freshmen but kicking is one of those mental things you start doing it now and every field goal turns to deja vu.

As vanilla as our play calling seems to be, there are ppl constantly open. Just need a qb who can get the ball in their hands. That, and cut out the dumb penalties, and we should be fine going forward.

No leadership top to bottom. Good thing we have that IPF.

The d-line didnt do bad, coach diaz needs to go up in the press box and make calls. He had the guys out of position on that 50yrd td run. And anytime #20 is the last line of defense, you in trouble.

It was 2nd and 15, no need to show you going blitz heavy, let lsu qb check out of the play. Even still, we only down 7, that game was lost in the 2nd quarter by the coaching staff not making adjustments, the one guy coach richt should have kept was art kehoe in my opinion, grant, coach searels might be a good o-line coach, but right now, im not seeing it, when coach kehoe came in, he had guys balling, maybe he was weak on recruiting, but he was still putting guys in the league, and had true freshmen balling, and got guys to wake up and start balling.

This is only one game, we would've been better off going with a power-I formation and just force guys like jones and mahoney to run block, those 2 guys are not solid pass blockers.

The talent is here, the receivers did what they had to do, the db's except dean, did what they were suppose to do. The linebackers played like trash in my opinion, pickney didnt play like he normally does, might need to go back up in weight, 215 for him not working.

With bandy on the field, this is going to be a different defense, without bandy, we may continue to see what we saw yesterday, dean plays clueless to many times, he should have the basics down by now, you could tell who been working in the off season and who hasnt.

I will say this, Blades is going to be a problem, he has the talent to be out there. He got a goog hit in on their qb, made a nice tackle after he gave up the catch, so once he develops, he'll be straight out their.

Offensively, rosier has done his best, what coach richt needs to realize is simple, you cant have a basic o-line and a average qb. You either got to have a dominant o-line to go with an average qb or a play-maker at qb with a basic o-line.

If brad kaaya was the qb last night he would've carved that lsu secondary to pieces. You put kaaya in with this much talent, that offense would've been clicking. People think something is wrong with Ahmon, the problem is rosier doesnt get the ball out quick enuff, with kaaya since he was a freshman, the ball was coming out.

Im just going to sit back and enjoy the season, but coach diaz is going to have to make some adjustments, coach patke, i will say the linebackers improved in their drops, but to many players taking the wrong gaps on defense, like on that second rushing touchdown, joe jackson had already engaged the o-linemen, but some linebacker decided to come and join him and let running skip right into the endzone, instead of shooting the gap.

Shouts out to g-willis for balling last night, he'll be a problem all year. We cant have a basic qb and a sporadic punter, they need to just let feagles work on punting straight first, we dont need him trying to do angle kicks, try that next year, when you got your offense and punting units putting you defense in bad field position, its gone be hard to win the games we should we be winning.

Lsu has athletes but they're qb is sorry, 140yrds but he made more plays and kept the ball safe than we did.

This. I don’t have a problem with the system per say but we most definitely need better “arm talent” back at the QB spot . Idc is they know the whole playbook or not.

Let’s not overreact! To the recruits, majority of the negative comments are coming from the fans of: UF FSU UGA Bama and OSU. Everyone who are insightful football fans have known for years that LSU consistently has a loaded talent team. LSU had coaching issues due to poor offensive schemes. Basically, we witnessed our weakness: DL, OL, LB, and QB positions. Canes loss top four DL : Thomas Norton Macintosh and Harris. To the coaching staff, rebuild with Juco DT and OL! Finally, the qb coach needs to find the best Juco qb available and camp at his school. We will be fine with the projected incoming recruits: 2019 and 2020!

In watching the game and looking at the game stats, I don't think things are as bad as they seem. The glaring weakness are:

1) Punting - Feagles is killing us. LSU has 7!!!!.... Yes 7 possession from their own 42 yard line or better. Giving a good team, even a bad one great field possession is a game killer. Feagles has to get his act together or its time to move on to someone else.

2) Run Blocking - Our O-line couldn't create many holes or get any movement. This put more pressure on Rosier. Per the game announcers, our average distance on 3rd down was 3 and 8. Got to get better on the O-Line. Also, need to have more short throws on 1st and 2nd down and stop trying to hit so many home runs.

3) Penalties - There were so many penalties that killed drives just when we would have a positive play on offense. I believe this will correct itself.

4) Rosier's continued inaccuracy. He was 15 for 35. In all fairness, he was getting pressured and lit up when we fell far behind and became 1 dimensional. However, because of the pressure, he reverted back to his old ways. I saw him step up in the pocket like he is supposed to, but would not set his feet causing balls to sail. Also, Rosier attempted far too many deep balls. It's not his strength. The play calls need to change to play to Rosier's strengths. The tell-tell sign was when the announcers said they had talked to LSU Defensive Coordinator Dava Aranda and he said Miami had no intermediate passing game. They scouted this the entire summer and Richt is teaching and calling the same deep ball plays. He's got to miss in the short and intermediate offense not the pound the ball and play action pass deep all the time. It's time to add some new plays to the playbook.

That's my 2 cents.

On another note, FSU looks horrible and VT looks to be a formidable opponent for the Coastal crown.

They have already been changed to play to Rosier's strengths. You are literally seeing Rosier with an offense suited to him and he still looks like that. He doesn't know how to go through his progressions or throw accurately and he shouldn't ever take another snap here again. I am not sure how posters do not understand that you are not doing anyone any favors but putting off the inevitable. Elite coaches build towards and think about the long term not the short term like Richt is doing by playing Rosier. There is a sizable gap between this team and the elite teams in college football right now. The staff needs to see if the young guys across the board can close down that gap in the coming years.
