Miami Rush defense

This is the problem. Lack of depth and how will that play out over 4 quarters. If you can get them 3rd and long you go essentially go without any of those DT and slide Bain inside.

DT is a huge question mark for this defense .
Y’all keep saying this but what team has a legit 4-5 DTs? And Blount is basically going to be playing DT too

Those run defense stats were driven by our terrible schedule. It wasn't as glaring a weakness as our pass defense, but it certainly wasn't the 19th best run defense in the country.

Bigger question is how is ND stopping the run?
Lost best DT and best LB and not sure if they got a next man up for either.

I keep hearing on all these podcasts how Notre Dame's "three-headed rushing attack" is going to run all over us. The consensus seems to be that our defense was so bad last year that even with Heatherman, it won't improve enough to stop them.
Curious, I looked up last year's stats and was surprised to see that our run defense was actually better then expected —and statistically better than Notre Dame's.
* Rushing Defense Rank: Miami was 19th nationally, while Notre Dame was 49th.
* Yards Per Rush Allowed: We allowed 3.75, while they allowed 3.78.
* Rushing TDs Allowed: Both teams gave up 16.
The real issue wasn't our run defense; it was our atrocious safety play. With Heatherman's arrival and a revamped defensive backfield, I expect that weakness to be largely fixed.
I think the key to this game will be how well our safeties limit big runs. If they can contain Notre Dame's ground game and prevent those explosive plays, I have no doubt we'll win.

SP+ Canes defense was #52 per quick search, SP+ is better than the regular stats because it does opponent adjustments and a five factor analysis (Efficiency, Explosiveness, Field Position, Finishing Drives, Turnovers).

But what is true is that the run defense was bad because of the back 7 and because they were getting flat-footed and wrong-footed by pre-snap motion ******** with their assignments and confusing them and getting them out of position, their DL havoc rate was good IIRC and they didn't have bad trenches talent getting blown off the ball which would be a harder problem to fix.

Went back and watched their playoff games and the Louisville game. Riley was a HUGE part of their running game. If they needed a big 3rd and short or anywhere near the redzone it was with his legs. Think they’re going to miss him more than they think

It’s been so long since Miami has had elite talent that you all forgot what it is even supposed to look like. Sad times.

Georgia has 57 players on NFL rosters.

Miami still isn’t close to the top rosters in college football. Miami has talent but still lack depth at many positions. Maybe one day Mario will be able to get Miami back to rosters that reload year after year.

Rush defense was very good in 11 games and very bad in two.

I don’t think any of that matters anyway because we’re running a different defense under a different coordinator.

Not quite there, but we're close. This looks like our most talented squad in many years.

THIS!!

Here is their DT depth chart:

41 - Donovan Hinish - He's 6-2 and 277. Played in every game last year, only started 3. Undersized, low 3-star recruit. True junior.

47 - Jason Onye - 6'5 and 302. Redshirt senior, played the first 5 games last year and then left the team for personal reasons. Has never started a game in his career, but he has blocked 2 FGs so they need to be cognizant of that. But this kid is a career backup who hasn't played since early October last year. And he's the other starter.

Backups are 97 Gabriel Rubio -- 6'5 and 321. Played in every game last year, started three. Former top 150 kid.

93 - Jared Dawson - 6'1 and 288. Sixth year senior who has never started a single game in his career. Been a backup for 5 years.

So their top 4 guys have started a total combined 6 games. Where's this proven production? Where are the all-america's? Where are the first-rounders? I thought every team but us had 4-5 NFL ready-made dudes at DT.

Good observation. Not every top 10 team (or even every Natl Champion) is loaded at every position group like our 2001 team.

Was the Tennessee team that won the NC the year after Manning left loaded at every position?

Everybody gets the roster isn’t elite. Even the so call elite teams don’t have 4-5 legit DTs that can play

Honestly didn’t realize their interior situation was that dire, we need to capitalize on this (and I expect us to).
