I keep hearing on all these podcasts how Notre Dame's "three-headed rushing attack" is going to run all over us. The consensus seems to be that our defense was so bad last year that even with Heatherman, it won't improve enough to stop them.
Curious, I looked up last year's stats and was surprised to see that our run defense was actually better then expected —and statistically better than Notre Dame's.
* Rushing Defense Rank: Miami was 19th nationally, while Notre Dame was 49th.
* Yards Per Rush Allowed: We allowed 3.75, while they allowed 3.78.
* Rushing TDs Allowed: Both teams gave up 16.
The real issue wasn't our run defense; it was our atrocious safety play. With Heatherman's arrival and a revamped defensive backfield, I expect that weakness to be largely fixed.
I think the key to this game will be how well our safeties limit big runs. If they can contain Notre Dame's ground game and prevent those explosive plays, I have no doubt we'll win.
