The following is a side-by-side roster comparison of the Hurricanes of 2023 vs 2021.

Names in green denote incoming players with no college football experience.

WR seems like a big dip...from a .91 to an .88, but man, Mark Pope and Jeremiah Payton straight up could.not.play. Just cheeks as college football players. Romello Brinson...idk...I thought he'd be good, but it seems he could not play either. Perhaps a change of scenery will be good for him. Colbie Young showed more in one half-assed season of football than any of those guys and its a massive gap in recruiting ranking.

My heart and best intentions tell me we've upgraded, but it seems the facts and the evidence tell me we have not 😥😭

Perhaps a bit of a flaw. Hear me out.

When you are averaging the room, say...the QB room in 2001...the numbers are relatively close. 90.1 to 90.9. No big deal. But should we really count Matocha against the number? He never played. Was inoffensive, but averages of the room show a closer talent gap than I'd otherwise present. If you take Matocha off that average, you get a .9345 average, which seems to be more indicative to my perceived difference in QB quality because of the inclusion of D'Eriq King, even though Jake Garcia does the heavy lifting.

I'm not sure how you'd make it universal outside of making select players exempt, but Matocha seems like a good test case to prove my point.

It’s that big of a dip in part because Kirk is presently unranked. The 0.6999 that I throw in for all unranked players is dragging the ide receiver average down. I’ll update it once 247 provides a rating.

Colby Young was unranked when he signed last year; 247 later updated to provide a rating.

We upgraded strongly in the areas we needed to the most - offensive line and linebacker. Those are much better than 2022, and better than 2021. Barring a TVD injury I’m not glum like I was entering the off-season. This team could really surprise people; the bar was artificially set so low by bad scheme and a horrendous deficiency at offensive line. Both have been hypothetically fixed.
