The summer update of the Rivals250 for the class of 2020 was released today.

And there was plenty of movement in the most recent version of the rankings, as there were tons of movers and shakers after another round of camps and evaluations revealed new insight on the rising senior class.

How did Miami and Category20 do? The Canes' total number of commits inside the Rivals250 actually stayed the same since the last update and held steady at six. S Keshawn Washington gave Miami his commitment and QB Tyler Van Dyke got a raise, going from outside the Rivals250 to #184 overall in the country, while S Jaiden Francois and DT Tre'von Riggins took a bit of a tumble outside the Rivals250. Of Miami commits, RB Don Chaney got the biggest bump from within the rankings and is now UM's highest ranked commit on Rivals, getting a nice 59 spot raise to #30 overall. The jump also allowed him to claim 5-star status on the 247Composite.

There were also plenty of Hurricanes' targets that made an appearance on the Rivals250, reflecting yet another deep pool of talent in Florida this year.

Without further delay, here's a handy, dandy list of the Miami commits and targets in the newest Rivals250.

Thoughts

**
I have been big fans of the game's of both LB Trenton Simpson and OT Connor McLaughlin for a while now, so it was definitely justified to see them get massive bumps. Simpson, who moved up 88 spots to #76 overall, continues to show rapid development as a high-impact linebacker and is a quick-twitch athlete with big burst to close. McLaughlin, who went from outside the Rivals250 to #168 overall, is a developmental lineman in the mold of what Butch Barry is looking for: long, lean and athletic. After recently talking with McLaughlin, he said Miami is still in constant contact with him and that he would be making a visit "soon", while the Canes are in Simpson's top 5 and he is in the process of scheduling an official visit.

**WR target Darin Turner took a 138 spot tumble to #230 overall and that is likely due to speed concerns. It takes him some time to accelerate to his top speed and he is not as fluid getting in and out of his breaks as you might like. It says a lot that he is still in the Rivals250 though, and that's because he checks most every other box as a physically dominant outside receiver with great hands. Miami TE commit Dominic Mammarelli also continued his slow and methodical fall down the rankings, dropping another 21 spots to the fringe of the Rivals250 (#242 overall). It's very tough for anyone to maintain his high perch when he's not showing up to off-season camps AND his high school team throws the ball 5 times per game. Again though, the fact that he is still rated highly with such little exposure shows you how impressive Mammarelli's raw tools are. Mammarelli is still very solid with the Canes, while Turner just put UM in his top 6 and is close to scheduling an official visit.

**Miami RB commit Don Chaney Jr. finally got his due from Rivals, getting a 59 spot boost to #30 overall and within striking distance of 5-star status on the platform. Elsewhere, the move did allow him to pick up his fifth star in the 247Composite, so congrats to him on something well deserved. Two major Rivals analysts were bullish on Chaney for this update, including National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell:

"Miami running back commitment Don Chaney is a guy who could be special at the next level and I, along with Rob Cassidy, pushed to have him move up about 60 spots in the rankings. Running backs are very hit or miss but I like Chaney's speed and vision and think it translates well to the college and NFL game."

Southeast Recruiting Analyst Rob Cassidy didn't stop there though, and said he still believes Chaney is too low even at #30:

"Miami running back commit Don Chaney is probably a bit too low. He has elite tools and has an incredibly high ceiling. The problem was we didn’t see him much this offseason so moving him into five-star range wasn’t an option. That said, Cheney will likely be in attendance at the Rivals100 Five-Star Challenge in June and is primed to make a statement at the event. I think once the other members of the national staff see him in action, he’ll get his due."

Clearly Chaney has impressed the pair and could be on the verge of adding more accolades in the future. He is still a strong Miami commitment.

I think the problem with Francois is that he is really suited to be a safety which is what Miami will play him as but as a corner he has a lot of concerns right now
Francois doesn’t really have concerns playing corner, he’s 6’0 180 right now and ran a 4.64(which isn’t great but isn’t bad). He can play corner. He has excellent cover skills

I disagree on "excellent cover skills". He has decent cover skills but he has many problems in his technique an just doesnt have the upside athletically to ignore those problems and rank him high. He's a great player and a CANE but he is a better safety.

When does he ever get beat? A 4.64 is not a bad starting point for a corner, that number could greatly be improved in college and we have seen that. Just because you are atheltic don’t mean you are good, see Lejond cavazos. Francois is the best db in Florida outside of Fred Davis and quite frankly he might be better than him honestly. He’s a ballhawk period and absolutely a top 100 talent

Cut to the chase... we got a chance with flowe or nah?

lol

Still a lot of time left for him and I think he's decently open. Going to take a massive recruiting effort against some of the top powers in the country to pull him all the way from the west coast, so obviously the chances aren't high at this point.

I've always said, the keys for out of state 5-stars and Miami are: win big and official visit. Neither has happened yet, so still a lot to be determined.

That said, he hasn't visited all of the schools in his top 12, but he did visit Miami, he's clearly comfortable living in/near a big city, early playing time is a factor, and he's already committed to an official visit in the future (Although that could obviously change). There's very clearly some level of interest here.

Agree but we as fans need to understand the situation and tamper our expectations. Hes the best linebacker recruit to come out in at least a couple of years. Miami just went 7-6. Not a usual match. Until we show him a reason to come here he wont come.

Excellent overview Stefan! Thanks again!

Agreed, it may not be blazing but it’s a good starting point, certainly more so than a 4.9 40.
