Well-loved UM Hurricanes strength coach Andreu Swasey not retained by Mark Richt

The man who kept dozens of Hurricanes returning to the University of Miami to work out and stay in shape during their NFL careers – and beyond – was relieved of his duties Thursday.

Head strength and conditioning coach Andreu Swasey, a native Miamian who just completed his 15[SUP]th[/SUP] season at UM – 18 seasons if you count his previous stints at UM – was told by athletic director Blake James that he would not be retained by new coach Mark Richt.

“I’ve been there a long time,’’ a saddened Swasey, 44, told the Miami Herald by phone on Friday. “My heart is there. I’ve done everything with my heart and soul. If I had done something wrong, then I’d understand.

“I talked to Mark after I met with Blake in person. He wasn’t rude. He said there was nothing I did wrong. My job is to develop young men and help them become better people and that’s what I tried to live.’’

Former Hurricanes were upset by Swasey’s dismissal, and have been calling him since he first learned the news. “Oh man, it’s been constant,’’ Swasey said. “Andre Johnson, Ed Reed, Edgerrin James, Reggie Wayne, D.J. Williams, Jon Vilma, Phillip Dorsett, Denzel Perryman, Santana Moss, Antrel Rolle, Olivier Vernon, Jimmy Graham… It hasn’t stopped.’’

Moss, 36, a former Jets and Redskins receiver, said he heard the news from Edgerrin James. “EJ gave me a holler and that gave me a little low blow,’’ Moss said. “I understand the business, but when it comes down to what he meant to that program, it’s a tough loss for a lot of us. I’m for change when it’s needed, but we’ve all been sitting on pins and needles just hoping he’d stay. We hope whoever comes in knows the tradition and what we’re all about – coming back and showing love to the school that basically made us.’’

Added Moss: “If it wasn’t for Swasey, our teams would have been way worse than they’ve been the past few years.’’
Moss’s younger brother Sinorice, another former UM and NFL receiver who now lives in Los Angeles, said Friday that he was “still trying to wrap my head around this situation.

“We understand the business and the politics behind it, but it’s a sad time because of all the things Swasey has done for this program. And not just for football, but baseball, track and down the line. The energy he brought – he bled for that school. Everything he did, he did for the University of Miami. We came back for Swasey.’’

UM has not announced its new strength and conditioning staff.

“Coach Richt wanted to bring in his own guy, which is understandable,’’ Swasey said. “He didn’t know me. It’s just all of a sudden. I’m trying to gather it all in and see my options.’’

Swasey, a Carol City High graduate who earned his bachelor’s degree from Baylor, said he will sit with his family and explore his options. He has four children, including son Andrew, who played at UM and is now a firefighter in Orlando. His wife Monica is a personal trainer who trains MLB players such as Jon Jay and Yonder Alonzo.

“It’s been a good ride,’’ Swasey said. “Hopefully I’ll have an opportunity to go somewhere to do what I love.’’

Despite their dismay about Swasey’s departure, the Moss brothers said they like the Richt hire very much and will not stop working out at UM.

“We’ll be part of UM forever,’’ Sinorice said. “But Andreu Swasey will be truly missed.’’

As was expected!

He was part of the problem. He sucked. He was more worried about the pros that would return than the kids he had in front of him.

I'm not a S&C expert but Miamis teams over the last 10+ years have neither looked strong or conditioned.

I don't know if you blame that on the S&C coach or the Head coach for directing a certain agenda.

As a matter of fact, to me, they look like the worst conditioned teams I've ever seen at Miami.

Is it the S&C coach?

Head coach agenda?

Recruiting lesser talent?

I'm not blaming anyone, just gonna trust Richt knows what he's doing

Apparently the guys on the UGA boards are wanting Swasey over the guy there now, who has done a excellent job. Wouldn't surprise me if Hocke is the guy who comes to replace him.

Everybody wants the house cleaned, understandable. But swasey or any other S&C guy is doing what every coach on campus is implementing for the Team

Im not blaming EVERYTHING on him, when we had Shannon and Golden as the HCs over the last 10 years.

I remember hearing weightlifting was **** near optional under RS and AG wanted marshmallow men rubbing around.

Swasey could've been a problem but he wasn't THE problem. Mediocre coaches and a dip in overall quality of player top to bottom .

Im pretty sure Richt will make a good hire, so there's that. But the biggest sickness was diagnosed on 10/25/15 and cured on 12/4/15

Those former players are making comments as if Swasey had died suddenly not just get replaced and Swasey's acting as if he had a lifetime contract and expected to retire from miami at 65.Reading all those comments from ex players no way in **** Golden coming from Temple could have ever thought of bringing his own SC guy here.Only a proven coach like Richt could get the AD to go along with him.

If he didn't pass his certification really the only option was to fire him. I don't understand the sympathy for the guy. He is horrible

Mark canned Art, who was actually a Miami institution; no heads are, or will be safe. I don't know crap about S&C, but firing dudes who have been here forever is a sign that maybe Mark wants to win more than make friends. He has enough of those at UGA.

Monica Swasey is not doing a very good job training Jon Jay and Yonder Alonzo. Both are JAGs in MLB.

Maybe they are just JAG's no matter who the strength coach is. Last time I looked they are still in the majors making millions of dollars a year.

One thing totally missing from the threads (at least I have not seen it) is one name: Tony Bosch. If your Mark Richt or Mark Richt's agent, you perform your due diligence (they are not Fataweenie Alfredo and his agent being "blindsided" by something that was in the Herald months before (Shapiro) you signed) and know the following:

- Swasey was at UM during all of Bosch's dealings

- Bosch's office was right across South Dixie from Swasey's

- You don't know what else were NFL players coning down for beyond Swasey's easy workouts, but you do know the NFL PED regime is much looser than MLBs

- UM panicked and tested the baseball team for PEDs after the Bosch story broke

- Lazaro (Lazer) Collazo, former UM Coach, indicted in the Bosch affair

I wouldn't be suprised if Richt made sure that he could deal with the whole S&C, not just the guy assigned to the Football team (currently Cols Collas) when he negotiated his contract. He is no fool.

Who cares, if the old players give a **** about the U, maybe they can start forking over some money to help get this team a stadium in tropical park or someplace closer...
They can still train with swasey in any gym they want,

Its allabout who u recruit

It's not personal; it's business. Richt evaluated the S&C program and he wants to go in a different direction. Obviously Blake concurred. Putting it in perspective, it's quite remarkable that Andreu lasted as long as he did with 3 failed regimes. I'd suspect we'll be delighted with the new S&C and so will the former players.
