Miami became a national team when Howard became head coach. They were not an upper tier team until Howard. Why did Howard change Miami AND college football. Howard brought pro style offense to the U and to college football, in other words innovation. Howard left and Jimmy came here and most thought the dream is over, some cowboy from Oklahoma, what can he bring. He brought SPEED to the game. Indicative of this is speed replaced size in many programs. But Jimmy's strength was evaluating people whether it be staff or players. I could recite multiple instances where Jimmy recognized value where others could not, one example would be Russell Maryland, a chubby kid from Chicago who wanted to play for ND. The other evaluation that was so important was Staff. Just look at his coaching staff and realize their success after Miami. Then came Dennis from a primarily white Washington team to rough and tough Miami. Folks thought he'd surely fail but what did he bring, the one back offense and a system that was unique plus he kept our defense intact plus 2 NC teams. Next came Butch and he saw that Dennis fit players into his system but Butch sought talent and he was incredibly astute in analyzing talent, Butch built what was the most talented squad ever in college football, even better then Jimmy's 1986 team.
Now we have Mario, I'd like to know what he brings that could change football and fix the U? So far I'd say he is trying to dominate the LOS. Will that be enough? Will his staff be successful after the U? He did fire Gattis but Dawson came on strong but has slipped. Against A&M when A&M got to a one score situation, Dawson kept firing but since has seemed too conservative. What happened?
Down the road, WHAT WILL BE MARIO'S LEGACY? Or will he be another in the long line of failures in the most talent rich area of college football?
